gourmet kitchen-edgewood cabinetry

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, chances are you’ve checked out some media sites for some ideas.

It’s always fun to flip through the pages of a magazine and pick out styles you enjoy, or by doing a simple search on the computer, you can have literally thousands of images to look through in a matter of seconds. There is, however, a positive and negative aspect to planning your project this way.

On the positive side, using media sources are a great source of inspiration for your kitchen. It can get you thinking about different decisions that will help the process go much smoother. Do you want cabinetry up to the ceiling, or do you want to leave some space? How do you feel about glass doors on some or all of the cabinets? Would you like shelves in lieu of some upper cabinets?

While you’re thinking about that, you can take note of certain styles that appeal to you. Maybe you like a distressed look, or you’d like to go with a modern flat front for your cabinets. Media sites can give you ideas for hardware, paint color, and lighting fixtures to help you get started.

You can also get some great ideas for customizing and organizing your kitchen online. Cabinet shelves that pull out are a popular feature that are helpful. Narrow pull-out cabinets that hold spices or canned goods may help you keep things organized too. Does a lazy susan in the corner appeal to you, or would you rather have some deep corner drawers?

Unfortunately, many people who go on the internet or flip through a magazine have an unrealistic idea of what their kitchen will look like. Just like they airbrush models in the fashion magazines, kitchens are made to look perfect with fake lighting and computer touch-ups.

These pictures are also taken in kitchens that are extremely large, which tend to disappoint the typical homeowner when they realize that all the bells and whistles won’t necessarily work in the kitchen in their home. A six-burner range with a double oven would be a great addition, but in many kitchens, it’s just not practical.

Homeowners also tend to fall in love with certain styles that may not be feasible for them. They use the best-of-the-best in those pictures, and then there’s a letdown when they realize they can’t afford solid marble countertops or exotic hardwood floors.

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, it’s always good to look through some pictures online or in magazines to get some general ideas, but don’t get your heart set on anything just yet. Then, meet with your contractor and talk about the style you like and he can guide you through some choices within your budget.
