Think S.U.D.S. when choosing a sink size that fits your kitchen. This should be an easy mnemonic  to remember – get it?

S. Size

most definitely matters, and visually, symmetry is important. The sink should be proportional to the overall dimensions of the kitchen. An open concept, ultra-large space can, and should, accommodate an oversized vessel. A small kitchen plan simply looks better when the choice is size-appropriate. Sinks take up valuable counter space. How much work-area are you willing to sacrifice?  Think symmetry when your sink is located under a window. Ideally, the width of the window and the sink should be about the same size.

U. Use

How you use the kitchen sink factors into the size. Large families or large pots and pans require bigger sinks. If your largest roasting pan sits flat in the sink, then chances are it’s the right size.

D. Depth

is an important aspect of size. While you have multiple choices, from an 8 inch to a super-deep 15 inches, your size might just be the deciding factor. Standard base cabinets are 35 inches high if members of your family are “vertically challenged” they might not be able to reach the bottom of the sink. Stop by our showroom and try some out for size.

S. Shape.

Square or round. Single, double or triple bowl. Zero-radius. Your choices are almost unlimited.  Your decision might depend on why you are buying a new sink in the first place. If you are only replacing an old worn-out unit, you are limited by the existing cutout. If remodeling, pick a favorite shape and style, then let your budget be your guide.

A quality kitchen sink will last you at least 10-12 years (everything grows old eventually), so choose wisely, and call on us anytime. We are always here to help.

Kitchens are a focus point in the home. More than any other room in the house, the kitchen needs to be functional and make the most of the space available.

Sometimes, a kitchen island is the perfect way to accomplish this.

Is an island right for your kitchen? An island can add more counter-top and cabinet space. It changes the flow of the room while also adding a variety of new options for organization. If you have a little extra space, an island might be just the thing to help your kitchen become more efficient.

How much room do you need for a kitchen island? How much room you need in order to have a kitchen island varies on the size and type of island you want. A small, compact island can fit in a small kitchen.

You want enough area around the island for you and those who live with you to comfortably move about the kitchen. According to This Old House, a standard size for an island is 2 ft. deep and 4 ft. long. If you want an island, your kitchen should be at least 8 ft. wide and 12 ft. long.

It also depends on what you want to use the island for. If you are planning on using the island as an eating area, you will need to factor in space for the chairs. You want to have enough room to walk around the chairs while someone is sitting in them.

When measuring, make sure you have enough room to easily open all cabinet, dishwasher, and pantry doors. You never want an island to block access to one of these.
