Solution to Small Spaces

Trying to find the perfect solution to small spaces isn’t always easy. After all, you have awkward sizes to work with and always more stuff than seems to fit.

Custom designed storage solutions help you create the perfect option every time. From designing for extra shelving in mind above your kitchen cabinets to accessories to divide a large drawer, small spaces don’t have to suffer from no storage.

Often times, pre-fabricated solutions just don’t work. They’re too bulky and end up giving you less room than before. Before you give up, try a few of these options to make your small space larger.

Turn Seating Into Storage

One of the more popular solutions for small spaces is to turn your seating into storage. Many ottomans double as extra storage, but did you know you can also design chairs, benches and tables with storage space? For instance, a bar chair in your kitchen might sit tall enough to have a few small shelves below the seat. A bench with comfy cushions works as a sofa and storage solution.

For a few ideas for your own design, Better Homes & Gardens lists 14 creative ways to turn your furniture into storage.

Floating Cabinets/Shelves

You don’t always have space for cabinets that sit on your floor, but what about that open area above your sofa or behind the toilet? A floating cabinet can fit in almost any space as long as you have a little room on your wall. Consider a series of smaller cabinets or blocks for storing books, toiletries, games or anything else you want.

Of course, floating shelves also help to maximize space in small areas. The great thing about cabinets and blocks is they also double as shelving.

Custom Sizing

Want traditional cabinets and bookshelves? No problem. Custom sizing is the best solution for small spaces. For instance, if you have a tiny kitchen, use thinner cabinets and maximize your space with accessories. Need inspiration? See our post 8 Tricks For Doubling The Space In Your Cabinets to see how organizers, baskets and other solutions make even small cabinets seem large.

Use Vertical Spaces

How often do you just look at the horizontal spacing for maximizing your space? While typically you store things horizontally on shelves or in cabinets, think about all the vertical spacing you’re missing out on. For instance, the kitchen featured in this post’s image doesn’t have to stop with just cabinets.

Frequently used pots could hang on the side of the upper cabinets. Floating shelves on the sides of the cabinets near the window work great for herbs or collectibles. Even the brick wall could be used for hanging a mop and broom.

Think vertically and you’ll be amazed at how much more space you have. For instance, if you want a bookcase, consider having shelves that don’t sit flush with the door. Leave a few inches of space and you could add file organizers to the inside of the doors for storing important documents, comic books, remotes or anything else you want.

Remove Doors

Doors aren’t usually a bad thing, but when it comes to small spaces, they can get in the way quickly. Maybe you’d love to have a custom-designed bench with drawers in built-in. However, the door leading to the next room makes it impossible for you to have a bench as long as you need. Take down the door and replace it with a decorative curtain. As long as you still have room to walk, it’s the perfect solution to small spaces.

Separate Rooms With Shelving

For small spaces that blend several rooms into one, consider dividing your rooms with storage. Floor to ceiling shelving helps you not only add space, but separate your rooms. They work as walls and can be relatively thin or wide enough to hold anything you need. For a more decorative option, staggered shelving gives you a variety of different size shelves and it looks great too.

walk in closet-edgewood custom cabinetry

Have you thought about creating a walk-in closet in your bedroom or other part of the house lately?

While you might think walk-in closets are common, not everyone has one. Perhaps you think you don’t have room for such a thing, even though it doesn’t have to be exclusively in a bedroom closet. The good news for you is that you don’t need a lot of room to make an excellent walk-in closet full of storage space to get you better organized.

Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we’re experts in creating shelving and other storage devices in places that don’t have to be roomy. It doesn’t take a lot of wide-open space to create decent storage in a walk-in closet. It doesn’t matter if you convert an entire room into a walk-in closet or even a former tiny bathroom.

What kind of storage ideas can we design for you in a closet created for ease of use?

Different Forms of Shelving

We can create any type of shelving you need in a walk-in closet, including angled shelves for placing shoes. There isn’t anything better than walking into a closet and being able to see your entire shoe collection or other common items on one shelf so you can grab them instantly. This eliminates the need to have to use hangers for everything in a cramped closet.

Wood varieties are extensive when it comes to shelving, and we can use different types of finishes to bring a color that matches the surroundings. Regardless, shelves can be painted any color you want, giving a chance to add true style and aesthetic value if you regularly take visitors into your walk-in closet.

Pull-Out Storage Units

Sometimes you don’t want everything out in the open in a walk-in-closet. After all, you don’t want overly personal items sitting there for display if you have guests over on a regular basis. Pull-out storage units can be made with the illusion of not looking obstructive, yet can be made with deep storage space inside to hold dozens of small items.

We build these type of storage units regularly for not only walk-in closets, but also bathrooms and bedrooms. They can be constructed so when you open them, they open quietly to eliminate them sounding like opening a cave door.

Storage Bins

If you want storage that’s portable, we can even create wooden storage bins to place on your walk-in closet shelves. These can be easily labeled in a way that organizes your clothes like never before. One good idea is using each bin as your seasonal fashion choices. When you need to move those items somewhere else, the bins are light enough where you can easily transport them to another room.

Storage Niches

Wooden niches are becoming a popular choice that we’ve been building for our clients. These can work just as well in a walk-in closet and made in a variety of ways. Not all niches have to be embedded into a wall and can still be made as an open shelving unit. With an enclosed space on the sides, they’re great for storing things like jeans or bed linens.

These are just some of the storage ideas you can implement into a walk-in closet using our cabinetry designs. Contact us here at Edgewood Cabinetry so we can work with you on designing what you truly want in your walk-in closet and finally bring some organization to your life. And we can accommodate other storage units throughout your home with the beautiful look of real wood.

Many modern homes come with open spaces, connected living areas, more windows and fewer walls separating rooms.  In addition, what used to be attic space is often being converted into additional rooms.  While the increased living space is a welcome advance, it does have a consequence.  Homeowners are having a harder time than ever finding adequate storage space.
