Thinking about getting new kitchen cabinets? You probably have tons of questions. And we have answers! Here are five of the most frequently asked questions about the kitchen cabinet and design installation process.

1. Will I Need a Permit?

The answer to this depends on where you live, but it’s possible. That’s because installing custom kitchen cabinets sometimes requires modifications to your electrical system. Additionally, you may need to modify your plumbing. And you may even want to move a wall. All of these processes require permits.

Don’t be intimidated, though! Permits and inspections serve to protect you from harm. And as a licensed, bonded, and insured contractor, we are happy to help you through the process. You can learn more about which projects typically require permits here. But remember, you should always check with your city before starting any home improvement project to be certain of your local requirements. Here’s additional information on which kitchen projects typically don’t require permits.

2. How Long Will It Take?

When you opt for custom kitchen cabinets, you’re hiring a professional to make and install cabinets for your unique space. The time it takes to complete the project is highly variable and dependent on your exact circumstances. For example, more elaborate designs and unusual sizes take longer to make than stock cabinets do. Everything from the layout of your kitchen to the design you choose will impact the time it takes to complete your remodel.

What you can expect, however, is clear and continuing communication throughout the process. We want you to be 100% satisfied with your results, so we take the time to plan every detail. As a result, you receive well-planned and well-built cabinets that fit perfectly into your home. And doing things right the first time always saves you time in the end.

3. How Does The Design Process Work?

Typically, we begin the design process by working directly with you. After all, they’re your cabinets, and we want to ensure everything is exactly how you want it. So we’ll discuss options with you and help you establish a budget. And we’ll answer any questions you have throughout the process.

Finally, we’ll create exact samples of your cabinet doors for your approval. Then, once you have approved the final design, we’ll move ahead to the construction and installation process.

4. How Do I Know Which Species of Wood to Choose?

Rest assured that we will help you select the best species of wood for your needs. Since we build custom cabinets, we don’t place limits on the type of wood you can choose for your kitchen. So if there’s a species you love, bring it up! We’ll let you know if it will work for your intended purpose.

In general, however, close-grained hardwoods are the best species for your kitchen. That’s because they hold up well to all the environmental factors they will inevitably be exposed to. Cleaners, steam, and water, for example, all take a toll on cabinets. Close-grained hardwoods, like maple, cherry, and hickory, are better able to withstand these exposures than are softer woods.

5. Can I Choose Painted Cabinets to Save Money?

When it comes to custom cabinets, the final price will depend on the options you select, and that includes the finish. Generally speaking, it’s true that painted cabinets are cheaper than those with natural wood finishes. However, it’s important to remember that here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we make all our cabinets from high-grade wood and use specialized construction techniques. As such, it’s not always the case that painted cabinets are cheaper.

For instance, specialty paints and complex door designs are often more expensive than a simple door with a clear lacquer finish. Indeed, the style of door you choose, along with the type of finish, typically has more influence on the overall price than whether you choose paint versus wood. Thankfully, though, it doesn’t hurt to explore your options. We don’t charge for design consultation, so there’s no obstacle to finding a style you love that fits within your budget.

Installing new kitchen cabinets? Great! You have the perfect opportunity to design your dream kitchen space and have everything exactly how you want it.

So don’t just focus on the exterior of the cabinets. Get the customized storage you need! Before you install your new cabinets, explore all of these incredible kitchen cabinet accessories.

Corner and Base Cabinet Organizers

Are you sick of opening your cabinet to an avalanche of plastic? Or are you tired of your entire cabinet being taken up by awkward piles of lids? If so, corner and base cabinet organizers are your new best friends.

Corner cabinets offer tons of space when they’re properly organized. For instance, a corner cabinet organizer neatly stores all your specialty appliances and the accessories that go with them. And a base cabinet organizer is perfect for storing all those plastic storage containers and lids!

Pull-Outs and Pull-Downs

Obviously, no one wants to display their trash to guests. It’s unsightly! And let’s be honest, the smell isn’t great either. So why ruin the perfect look of your new kitchen with trash cans and recycling bins? Keep it all out of sight with pull-outs and pull-downs.

With this purpose in mind, pull-outs and pull-downs offer you a way to easily store trash and recycling within your cabinets. Just pull down on the handle or slide the bin out, toss your garbage or recycling in, and close the door. Plus, emptying the bins is just as easy! Simply open the cabinet, remove the bin, empty it, and return it to the cabinet. So easy!

Lazy Susans

Imagine being able to open your cabinets and simply spin a lazy Susan to find what you need. No more moving stacks of cans or reaching around boxes. Finally, everything will be neatly organized and within your reach.

Lazy Susans are perfect options for cans, jars, and spices. They’re also wonderful for organizing coffee, tea, and cocoa. Or use a lazy Susan to organize all those cleaning supplies under your sink.

Drawer Inserts

We are firm believers that having a place for everything and everything in its place makes life simpler and better. And drawer inserts are the perfect way to do that.

Cooking utensils, silverware, and small items all too frequently turn into a jumbled mess in kitchen drawers. Fortunately, drawer inserts easily organize the contents of your drawers. And they’re customizable to fit your own unique needs!

Spice Racks

If you do a lot of cooking, you know there’s never enough room for your spices. They end up all over the place–on the back of your stove, cluttering your counters, and taking over your cabinets.

Thankfully, there’s an easy and beautiful solution to reduce your kitchen clutter–spice racks! Spice racks are easily added to any of your new kitchen cabinets, and they’re customizable to fit different size jars. So add one, two, or 10!

Wine Racks

What’s dinner without a little wine? Whether you want to display your favorite vintages or just keep bottles within easy reach to pair with dinner, wine racks are a beautiful addition to your cabinets.

Best of all, wine racks are completely customizable! So tuck your bottles neatly away inside a cabinet. Or put them on full display with a gorgeous rack that’s built into your kitchen island. Alternatively, go all out by creating a home bar in your kitchen. The sky’s the limit!

kitchen island and cabinets

Installing new kitchen cabinets is a big decision. After all, it’s a significant investment. So you want to get it right.

But how do you know which style of cabinets is best for your home? Here are four kitchen cabinet design styles to consider for your project.

1. Shaker

The Shaker style cabinets are named after the Shakers, who valued simplicity. As the name suggests, these cabinets are meant to be simple but functional. Hundreds of years later, Shaker cabinets are still popular. What a testament to the strength and beauty of this style!

In fact, you’ve probably seen Shaker cabinets many times before. They are known for their rails and styles design. You’ll also recognize their recessed door panels. If you enjoy minimalist styles with tons of functionality, Shaker cabinets are right for you.

In terms of construction, Shaker cabinets often use durable woods from the Northeastern United States. For example, cherry, oak, maple, and hickory all work well. It follows that many homeowners choose to stain or glaze their cabinets to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. But painting is an option, too. White and gray are popular choices.

2. Modern/Contemporary

Modern and contemporary cabinets are also popular choices. They’re perfect for those who enjoy a minimalist look. That’s because they feature flat panels. There are also minimal or no fixtures. This lack of visible hardware creates a sleek design that many homeowners find relaxing.

Additionally, because all the surfaces in these cabinets are flat, they work well in small spaces. It’s easy to create taller cabinets with this style. And you’ll enjoy using every inch of cabinet space. Plus, the sleek design helps small spaces feel larger.

We recommend using maple wood because modern and contemporary cabinets are typically painted. However, composites are also an option. White, gray, and black are popular color choices.

3. Country/Rustic

Country/Rustic cabinets are one of the most popular cabinet styles here in North Carolina. If you love the country, farmhouse, or cabin look, this is the style for you.

Country/Rustic cabinets put the beauty of natural wood on display through paints, glazes, and stains. That’s why maple, hickory, oak, and pine are popular choices.

Additionally, many homeowners choose to include elements like mesh, tin, and decorative panels to increase the country/rustic charm of these cabinets. They also combine especially well with iron, copper, and granite features in your kitchen.

4. Traditional

Do you love beautiful, ornate cabinets? Then traditional cabinets are the style for you. They incorporate a variety of adornments and embellishments to give a grand appearance. Arches, moldings, and raised panels are popular choices. So are ornate wrought iron or bronze fixtures and glass panels.

Traditional cabinets typically give a formal look to your kitchen. That’s because they typically feature elaborate European designs. Alternatively, combine traditional ornate decor with a more country/rustic appearance. Tuscan and French Country kitchens are perfect examples of this style.

When it comes to wood, cherry, oak, and maple are good choices for traditional cabinets. Some homeowners choose a stain or glaze to bring attention to the natural wood. Others paint the cabinets and give them an antique or distressed look. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to make a statement with traditional cabinets.

Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we offer all of the above styles of kitchen cabinets. And we’re happy to discuss your vision for your kitchen and help you choose cabinets to match.

As you think about the cabinet style you want, take a moment to consider the type of hardware you like, too. Hardware is like the icing on a cake. It completes the look of your cabinets. Need some inspiration? Check out these hardware styles to see which is best for you.

kitchen see through cabinets

Upgrading your kitchen is an exciting endeavor. It has the power to change the entire feeling of your home. But if you’re thinking about skipping the cabinets, you may want to reconsider. Here are five reasons to explore new cabinets.

1. New Cabinets Change the Look of Your Kitchen

Cabinets may be the single most important element if you want to change the look of your kitchen. They often take up the majority of the wall space, and they naturally draw your eye. So if you really want to revamp your kitchen, you can’t skip the cabinets.

Fortunately, there are a myriad of options to explore. When you replace your kitchen cabinets, you get to choose exactly the style, color, and species of wood you want. And you can decide exactly how much customization works for you. For example, choose stock cabinets to save on money and time. Add a few custom elements with semi-stock cabinets. Or opt for custom cabinets to design every detail.

Learn more about the differences in cabinet types here.

2. New Cabinets Increase Function

Are you sick of opening your cabinets to an avalanche of Tupperware lids? Or do you struggle to store all your pots and pans? Are your kitchen counters taken up with large appliances you have no where else to store? Fortunately, all of these problems and more can be solved with new kitchen cabinets.

If you install custom or semi-custom cabinets, you choose exactly the elements you need. For instance, add spice racks, Lazy Susans, or drawer inserts to easily increase organization. Or go all out and design custom cabinets that use every inch of wall space and perfectly accommodate all your storage needs.

Learn more about cabinet options here.

3. New Cabinets Add Counter Space

A lack of counter space is a problem in many homes. For example, many modern kitchen appliances, like stand mixers don’t fit easily into standard cabinet sizes. So they end up on the counters instead. Unfortunately, that leads to cluttered, unattractive counters and a lack of available work space.

Thankfully, new kitchen cabinets are a perfect remedy. So clear your counters by adding additional storage space for bulky items. Or create new counter space with larger base cabinets or a new kitchen island. You’ll finally have the beautiful, organized counters you’ve always wanted, along with plenty of space for rolling dough at your next pizza party.

4. It’s a Perfect Time to Get a Kitchen Island

Kitchen islands are popular right now because they add both storage and counter space. Plus, they double as a workspace or a wonderful place to enjoy a quick snack. And if you include a kitchen island when you upgrade your cabinets, you can be sure it perfectly matches the rest of your kitchen.

Moreover, you can choose to fully customize your kitchen island. For instance, choose the species of wood and type of countertop you want. Decide how many cabinets or drawers you’d like. And include options like drawer inserts, storage racks, and adjustable shelves to maximize functionality.

5. New Cabinets Boost Your Home’s Value

Including new cabinets in your kitchen upgrade is a sound investment. That’s because it increases your home’s value. Importantly, cabinet space is often at a premium. So if your home offers plenty of it, you’re ahead of the game.

If you decide to sell your home in the future, you’ll be able to wow potential buyers with beautiful new cabinets that offer plenty of storage space. That’s an attractive feature that will help your home compete on the market. So investing in new cabinets now could translate to a substantial return in the future.

As you consider upgrading your kitchen, remember that your cabinets are an important part of the process. So explore your options! And if you’re in our service area, we’d love to help you design your dream cabinets.  Reach out today to get started.

Kitchens have morphed into multipurpose rooms, so homeowners today don’t want generic designs. If your kitchen feels a little drab, it’s time for a refresh. Find the inspiration you need with the six best kitchen design trends of 2022.

1. Personalized Utility

With so many people now working from home, at least part-time, families spend significant amounts of time in their kitchens. As a result, homeowners are craving custom organization. In 2022, kitchens bring both style and function to the home.

So if you’ve been thinking about investing in custom kitchen storage solutions, this is a great time to get started. Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we offer a plethora of custom kitchen cabinet options, so you’re sure to find a style you love with the personalized utility you need. Add flair and function to your kitchen with options like custom-designed range hoods and vents, wine racks, pull-outs, and lazy Susans.

2. Wine Storage

Demand for wine storage has been high for the past few years, and that trend continues in 2022. Homeowners are adding dedicated space for their wine collections. So whether you just relax with an occasional glass of chardonnay or are a wine connoisseur with an enviable collection of vintage wines, adding wine storage to your kitchen is a trend you’ll want to follow.

And because 2022 is all about making your kitchen work for you, you can decide exactly how much space you want to devote to wine storage. Add a small wine rack in the corner of your kitchen, or go all out with a custom home bar. Kitchen island bars and refrigerated cabinets are excellent ideas for adding wine storage to your kitchen.

3. An Appreciation for Nature

Kitchens that celebrate nature are in style now. So this is an excellent time to consider replacing your stock cabinets with all-wood options. Using natural materials, such as quality wood cabinets invokes a peaceful feeling.

Pair your wood cabinets with other elements from nature, such as wood or bamboo bowls, live plants, cut flowers, and, of course, plenty of natural light.

4. Color

This year, we’re seeing homeowners adding color to their kitchens to bring in some of their own personalities. And again, you can use as much or as little color as you want and still be on trend. Dark, bold colors like oxblood red and navy blue work well to add a strong statement. Or choose a subtler color like sage green for a more tranquil atmosphere.

Try adding color to just your kitchen island or your backsplash to create a pop of color. Want a larger area? Many people choose to add color to their bottom cabinets while leaving the top cabinets and walls neutral. Or go all-in with floor-to ceiling color. Want something in between? Try traditional European style cabinets in Parisian blue to add color and classic charm to your kitchen.

5. Unique Style

With custom cabinets, the sky is the limit, and many homeowners are taking advantage of that flexibility to infuse their own unique personality into their kitchens. Ditch the stock cabinets, and come up with your own unique style.

Try fluted or arched cabinets for a unique design. Or add mesh panels, glass display doors, or ornate elements to create a one-of-a kind kitchen. Want a round kitchen island instead of a rectangle? Go for it! Now is the time to let your imagination run wild, and turn your kitchen dreams into reality.

6. Multi-functionality

Homeowners today use their kitchens for more than just cooking and eating. They want a gathering place where they can enjoy spending time with family and friends, a workspace to tackle tasks when working from home, and a place their children feel comfortable sitting and finishing their homework.

Kitchens in 2022 reflect those desires, with many homeowners opting to add comfortable seating, kitchen islands with an extended countertop for additional seating and work space, or including tech, like televisions, charging stations, and tablet stands. After all, how else are you going to follow along with your favorite new cooking class?

We love that 2022’s kitchen trends are all about making your home perfect for you. If you’re ready to start personalizing your kitchen, reach out, and we’ll be happy to help.

New kitchen cabinets are a major investment. You want to know that your money is well-spent on cabinets you’ll continue to love for many years to come. That’s why it’s important to prepare before you purchase. Here are four things you should know before buying kitchen cabinets.

1. What’s Your Budget?

Quality kitchen cabinets aren’t cheap. In fact, new cabinets often make up 50% of the cost of remodeling a kitchen. But selecting well-made cabinets is a worthwhile investment. After all, you likely use your kitchen cabinets on a daily basis. And installing new cabinets dramatically changes the look of your kitchen, so it’s one of the best ways to upgrade your space.

However, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you know your budget going into the project. That way, when you start getting quotes, you’ll have realistic expectations and can also prioritize what you want most if you’re working with a limited budget. For example, you may decide to keep some custom features but go with a cheaper species of wood. Or maybe the style is most important to you, so you’re willing to sacrifice some custom upgrades.

2. What Style Do You Like?

Cabinets come in a wide variety of styles, and that’s especially true when you work with a custom cabinet company like Edgewood Cabinetry. Having some idea of what you’re looking for saves you time during the purchase process (although we’re always happy to help you decide!). Do you love the European aesthetic with lots of embellishments? You want traditional cabinets. Prefer a minimalist design instead? Modern or Shaker styles will likely suit you best. Or maybe you’re dreaming of a country kitchen, in which case country/rustic cabinets are a perfect fit.

You should also think about the type of wood you like, along with the color of paint or stain you prefer. For example, Edgewood Cabinetry offers many wood species, such as mahogany, maple, oak, cherry, hickory, and pine. We can finish your cabinets with stains and glazing if you want to highlight the natural wood-grain. Or we can color-match any color of paint to give your cabinets the perfect look.

3. How Much Do You Want to Customize?

You’ll need to decide whether you want stock,  semi-custom, or fully custom cabinets. Stock cabinets are the cheapest option since they come in standard sizes. However, you should beware of purchasing stock cabinets on price alone. Many stock cabinets are made of particleboard or plywood covered in veneer and are not built to last. At Edgewood Cabinetry, our stock cabinets are always built from natural wood and are of the same superior quality as our custom cabinets. They’re simply made in standard sizes and don’t come with custom features.

Semi-custom cabinets are cheaper than fully-custom cabinets but still allow you to add some custom features. You can modify accents or add accessories, within the confines of standard stock cabinet sizes. If you’d like a few custom features but don’t have the budget to invest in fully custom cabinets, semi-custom cabinets are the way to go.

Finally, custom cabinets give you an unlimited range of options. You can customize every detail and add as many features as you like. Plus, custom cabinets are built to fit your space, so they don’t leave awkward gaps. And they allow you to maximize space by transforming every available inch into usable storage. The sky is the limit when it comes to custom cabinet options, so this is the choice to make your dream kitchen come to life.

4. What Options Do You Love?

Think about how you use your space and which features you need. Custom options and accessories always raise the price of your cabinets, but it’s a worthwhile investment to increase the beauty and utility of your kitchen. For example, you can add lazy Susans, drawer inserts, cabinet organizes, spice racks, pull-outs, and more. Decide what features are most important to you and which are nice-to-haves. That way, you’re prepared to make decisions when you begin getting quotes.

Remodeling your kitchen is exciting, but it can also be difficult to decide exactly what you want. Will a cozy country kitchen become the heart of your home, or is a sleek, modern kitchen more your style? Since you’re investing time and money into your remodeling project, you understandably want to make sure you choose a design you’ll love for years to come. Here are six design considerations to help you decide.

1. Overall Feel

First, you need to consider the overall feeling you want from your kitchen. Do you find sleek, clean, horizontal lines exhilirating? Or would you prefer a cozier, more rustic style that invites your family and friends to sit and have a long chat over meals? Do you like to have everything out of sight, or do you enjoy displaying pots, canisters, utensils, and decorative items?

If you would rather have a sleek, streamlined kitchen, a modern style is best for you. In contrast, if you’d like your kitchen to feel warm and cozy, a country style is a better choice.

2. Range

Your range is often a focal point in the kitchen, so you’ll want it to match the overall design. A cast iron range cooker is the quintessential choice for a country kitchen, but you can also create a country style with a brightly-colored range, or well-chosen neutral colors. On the other hand, stainless steel is the go-to option for a modern kitchen.

Remember, your range hood will also factor into the look of your kitchen. That’s why we offer custom range hoods and vents to match your cabinets and overall design.

3. Colors

Colors play a big part in creating the style you’re looking for. A modern kitchen typically uses black, grey, or white, in combination with stainless steel appliances. On the other hand, a country kitchen may make use of white elements for an airy feel, add brighter colors like blues or yellows, or focus on the wooden elements, by featuring glazed or stained maple, hickory, or oak.

4. Lighting

Your choice of lighting will also impact your kitchen’s style. Modern kitchens typically feature bright lighting that accentuates the sleek lines and smooth surfaces of the kitchen. Additionally, modern kitchens typically have few fixtures, so recessed lighting is often a good choice. Conversely, country kitchens often opt for warmer lighting, decorative fixtures, and plenty of natural light.

5. Accents and Hardware

Your choice of accents and hardware can make or break your look. If you prefer a minamalist style, a modern kitchen will work well for you. Modern kitchens typically include slim, sleek hardware and few, if any, accents. On the other hand, if you enjoy decorative accents and hardware, a country kitchen is the perfect choice. You’ll be able to add tons of charm through decorative accents and hardware like wrought iron fixtures, wire mesh, a butler’s sink, brass rails, and colored tiles.

6. Cabinets

Cabinets may be the most important design element in your kitchen. They take up much of your kitchen’s space, so getting them right is crucial. If you’ve decided that you prefer a modern, sleek look, you’ll typically want cabinets that have flat surfaces to create a streamlined effect. You may choose not to include visible hardware, or opt for thin, horizontal cabinet pulls that follow the same sleek lines as the rest of your kitchen.

More partial to a provincial or farmhouse atmosphere? Raised panel doors, decorative glass panels, and wire mesh will all add to the country appeal of your kitchen. Consider featuring a custom pantry with barn doors, or a cold larder to infuse your kitchen with old-time country charm.

Whether you choose to have a country kitchen or a modern one, Edgewood Cabinetry is here to help. We’ll work with you to help you design cabinets that fit perfectly with the style you want to achieve.  And with our plethora of custom options, you can be certain your kitchen cabinets will offer every functional element you need in a style you love. Contact us here to get started.

When you design a custom kitchen, you want every element to be perfect. Small details carry more weight than you may think. The right cabinet hardware can make or break your kitchen’s look. Here are eight cabinet hardware styles to consider with your custom kitchen.

1. Traditional Knob and Pull

If you think about the cabinets in most homes, you’ll see a combination of knobs and pulls, typically with knobs on cabinet doors and pulls on the drawers. If you like to keep things traditional, a combination of knobs and pulls could be the right fit for you. Moreover, there’s no reason to discount this style just because it’s common. There are so many different choices of knobs and pulls that you can make this style uniquely your own.

2. Drop Pulls

If you prefer something a little fancier, consider drop pulls. Drop pulls add an ornate touch to your kitchen and pair particularly well with other styles, like knobs and cup pulls. Since drop pulls are meant to lie flat, they work best on drawers. And because furniture-style cabinets are popular right now, drop pulls are an excellent choice.

3. Rustic

Are you planning to have lots of natural woodgrain on display in your kitchen? If so, rustic cabinet hardware could be just the touch you need. Hammered or wrought-iron handles and pulls give your kitchen a rustic feel, reminiscent of a log cabin. They also work well in kitchens that feature stone, marble, and granite elements.

4. Cremone Bolts

You have probably seen cremone bolts on casement windows and French doors, but they’re also a wonderful choice for kitchen cabinets, especially those with glass doors. Cremone bolts add a classic charm to your kitchen and come in many ornate designs. You’ll instantly add a romantic, high-end atmosphere to your kitchen by including cremone bolts on your cabinets.

5. Tubular Metal Pulls

If you prefer a modern, sleek look for your cabinets, tubular metal pulls are the way to go. These long, metal pulls come in a variety of finishes, so you can choose one that complements the color of your cabinets.  For example, brass, silver, and gold pulls work well with many cabinet colors. Or for a bolder look, pair black pulls with white or light-colored cabinets.

6. Cup Pulls

Cup pulls are designed to be grasped from the bottom and come in a variety of designs. This versatile hardware choice is equally as at home in a farmhouse style kitchen as an industrial one. For instance, cup pulls can add a vintage, modern, or rustic feel to your kitchen, depending on your choice of material and design.

7. Tuscan

Do you adore European style? Then, consider Tuscan cabinet pulls. These lovely pulls bring a distinctive European flair to your kitchen. Pair them with raised panel cabinets, and you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to the French or Italian countryside. At once provincial and elegant, Tuscan-style cabinet pulls are perfect if you want your kitchen to evoke an old-world European charm.

8. Novelty

Novelty cabinet hardware is a wonderful choice if you want to express a particular element of your personality. Although some may be quick to assume novelty hardware must be tacky or garish, quite the opposite is true. Tasteful and stylish novelty cabinet hardware abounds. So whether you want to display your love of the sea with seashell-themed pulls, want your hardware to give a nod to your love of nature with elements like leaves and vines, or want to pay homage to your equestrian lifestyle with subtle sleeping fox knobs, you’re sure to find novelty hardware that brings a unique element to your kitchen.

Remember, we at Edgewood Cabinetry are always happy to help you choose the right hardware to complement your custom cabinets. Contact us today to get started.

You’ve just moved into a beautiful new house, but something about the kitchen doesn’t feel quite right. It doesn’t feel like home. So what’s the problem? And more importantly, how can you fix it? Fortunately, it’s not as difficult as you may think.

Kitchens are particularly prone to feeling cold and sterile. That’s because so many kitchens have harsh lighting, tile floors, stainless steel appliances, and plain cabinets. Thankfully, there are a few easy things you can do to give your kitchen the warm, welcoming feeling you’re looking for. Here are six ways to make your new kitchen feel like home.

1. Add a Fruit Bowl

Something as simple as adding a fruit bowl to your kitchen can inject a much-needed dose of cheer to the room. The great thing about fruit bowls is they also give you a chance to display your personality. If you don’t already have one, you can select a fruit bowl that fits your style and fill it with your favorite fruits. Then, whenever you look into your kitchen, you’ll see a beautiful display of delicious fruit inviting you to sit, have a snack, and enjoy your space.

2. Start an Herb Garden

Plants add warmth and a homey feel to your kitchen. Why not brighten up your kitchen window with an herb garden? You’ll impart a happy feeling to the room and have fresh herbs when you cook. There are many herb garden kits on the market, so you can choose a style you love. Or take it a step further and build your own hanging herb garden. Opt for natural wood, or personalize your planter as much as you like by painting the pots and boxes.

3. Include a Rug

A well-placed kitchen rug adds softness and texture to the room. Choose a rug that fits in with your overall color scheme, or select bright patterns to add a pop of color instead. If you have a favorite rug from your last home, placing it in the kitchen brings a touch of familiarity to the room. And if you have tile, you’ll appreciate the literal warmth of the rug on cold mornings, too.

4. Fix Lighting Issues

Having the right lighting in your kitchen is everything. If your kitchen is too dark, brighten it up by installing lights under your cabinets. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes. On the other hand, if your kitchen has harsh, bright lighting, choose softer bulbs or consider replacing your light fixtures with a style that fits your personality.

5. Show Your Love

It’s often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. So doesn’t it make sense for your kitchen to reflect your love? Place items that make you feel good on display in your kitchen. This can be anything from the teapot you inherited from your grandmother, to your most-loved stock pot. Having a familiar item in sight helps your kitchen feel more like home. Alternatively, focus on items that show your personality, like favorite paintings, ceramics, or canisters. The more of yourself you put into your kitchen, the more it will feel like home.

6. Update Your Cabinets

Cabinets are a focal point in your kitchen, so making changes to them can give the room an entirely different appearance. Custom kitchen cabinets allow you to add style, warmth, and personalized functionality to your home. Brighten your kitchen or add an elegant touch with all-wood cabinets, or install a new kitchen island to create a cozy breakfast nook. Your kitchen will feel like home in no time.

Ready to update your cabinets? Edgewood Cabinetry has a plethora of design options, colors, features, and accessories so your cabinets can be truly personalized. And you’ll be able to customize as much or as little as you like, so whether you want to add a new china cabinet to display treasured knick knacks and fine china, or you want to replace all your kitchen cabinets and design every element, we can help.
