An easy way to make your cabinets “pop” is by adding details such as moldings, appliqués and onlays.

It adds cost, but gives you the magazine-worthy custom-cabinet look for less than the cost of going with custom cabinetry.

Let’s look at the various ways to create cabinets that are eye-catching and rich looking with different types of add-ons:

Moldings

Beautiful moldings dress up a room, and they do the same for cabinets, taking them from basic boxes to detailed pieces of built-in furniture:

  • Adding feet to kitchen (and bathroom) cabinets is a popular trend. The addition of feet makes simple cabinetry look more like fine furniture.
  • Not many things add a designer “fingerprint” like crown moldings do. It bridges the gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling and creates a seamless transition. Classy!
  • A classic French Provincial bathroom is dripping with elegance thanks to the use of curved cabinetry, and liberal use of moldings.
  • Moldings can be added to nearly every part of a cabinet and even to the edges of shelves to dress them up and add interest.

Cabinet Appliqués and Onlays

  • The addition of scroll-work creates rich detail not often seen in today’s traditional-style kitchens.
  • In this classic old-world style kitchen, designers added scroll work, corbels (on the island) and cabinet feet for a truly custom-built look.
  • A Victorian kitchen looks period thanks to the decorative onlays on dark wood cabinets.
  • This onlay stands out beautifully through the use of a contrasting colors of stain.

Be as subtle or as lavish as you want with the use of moldings, appliqués and add-ons, and make your cabinets look more interesting and more expensive at the same time.

A popular design choice for cabinets is the use of onlays & appliques, decorative additions such as scrolling wood and other designs carved in different materials that add a unique and atmospheric touch to your cabinetry.
What are some good reasons to select onlays and appliques?
Variety.  There’s a wide range of onlays and appliques you can choose from.  Some of the designs include fleur-de-lis, leaf scrolls, rosettes, and even faces, such as the visage of a classic lion.  Other designs are more abstract.  You would be able to find something suited to your personal taste and to the overall decor in a particular room.  For instance, while some designs might seem out of place in a room that has minimalistic or modern decor, they would be at home in a room with a more traditional or antique appearance.
Uniqueness.  Adding these decorative features could enhance the uniqueness of your cabinetry.  Just as the cabinets themselves can be customized for any room in your home, the onlays and appliques will make your cabinets look truly individualized, as if they were carved just for you.
Visual interest and aesthetic appeal.  Well-chosen onlays and appliques draw the eye and make the cabinetry look not only more visually interesting, but also beautiful; they highlight other features in the cabinetry and in the room as a whole.  Your cabinets shouldn’t be purely functional.  Along with their utility, they should also look lovely and contribute to the overall beauty of your home.
Richness.  High-quality onlays and appliques can make your cabinetry appear more expensive.  But you won’t need to spend a lot of money to achieve this effect.
