kitchen see through cabinets

Upgrading your kitchen is an exciting endeavor. It has the power to change the entire feeling of your home. But if you’re thinking about skipping the cabinets, you may want to reconsider. Here are five reasons to explore new cabinets.

1. New Cabinets Change the Look of Your Kitchen

Cabinets may be the single most important element if you want to change the look of your kitchen. They often take up the majority of the wall space, and they naturally draw your eye. So if you really want to revamp your kitchen, you can’t skip the cabinets.

Fortunately, there are a myriad of options to explore. When you replace your kitchen cabinets, you get to choose exactly the style, color, and species of wood you want. And you can decide exactly how much customization works for you. For example, choose stock cabinets to save on money and time. Add a few custom elements with semi-stock cabinets. Or opt for custom cabinets to design every detail.

2. New Cabinets Increase Function

Are you sick of opening your cabinets to an avalanche of Tupperware lids? Or do you struggle to store all your pots and pans? Are your kitchen counters taken up with large appliances you have no where else to store? Fortunately, all of these problems and more can be solved with new kitchen cabinets.

If you install custom or semi-custom cabinets, you choose exactly the elements you need. For instance, add spice racks, Lazy Susans, or drawer inserts to easily increase organization. Or go all out and design custom cabinets that use every inch of wall space and perfectly accommodate all your storage needs.

3. New Cabinets Add Counter Space

A lack of counter space is a problem in many homes. For example, many modern kitchen appliances, like stand mixers don’t fit easily into standard cabinet sizes. So they end up on the counters instead. Unfortunately, that leads to cluttered, unattractive counters and a lack of available work space.

Thankfully, new kitchen cabinets are a perfect remedy. So clear your counters by adding additional storage space for bulky items. Or create new counter space with larger base cabinets or a new kitchen island. You’ll finally have the beautiful, organized counters you’ve always wanted, along with plenty of space for rolling dough at your next pizza party.

4. It’s a Perfect Time to Get a Kitchen Island

Kitchen islands are popular right now because they add both storage and counter space. Plus, they double as a workspace or a wonderful place to enjoy a quick snack. And if you include a kitchen island when you upgrade your cabinets, you can be sure it perfectly matches the rest of your kitchen.

Moreover, you can choose to fully customize your kitchen island. For instance, choose the species of wood and type of countertop you want. Decide how many cabinets or drawers you’d like. And include options like drawer inserts, storage racks, and adjustable shelves to maximize functionality.

5. New Cabinets Boost Your Home’s Value

Including new cabinets in your kitchen upgrade is a sound investment. That’s because it increases your home’s value. Importantly, cabinet space is often at a premium. So if your home offers plenty of it, you’re ahead of the game.

If you decide to sell your home in the future, you’ll be able to wow potential buyers with beautiful new cabinets that offer plenty of storage space. That’s an attractive feature that will help your home compete on the market. So investing in new cabinets now could translate to a substantial return in the future.

7 Tips For An Efficient Kitchen Installation

No one wants a complicated kitchen installation. However, it’s easy to draw out the process for weeks, leaving you without a usable kitchen. The good news is it doesn’t have to take this long. It just takes some planning to ensure the process goes smoothly from start to finish. In most cases, the planning should take longer than the kitchen installation itself. This is a sign you’re doing it right and you’ll likely enjoy your kitchen even more without having to deal with installation stress.

1. Plan What You Want Before You Start

7 Tips For An Efficient Kitchen InstallationNothing sets a kitchen installation back worse than having to make changes throughout the process. For instance, you might suddenly want to change the layout or want larger appliances. This means all the work done so far has to be re-done to accommodate the changes.

Create a clear plan of exactly what you want. This includes your kitchen layout (which determines how everything will fit), appliance sizes, kitchen purpose and more. You’ll even need to plan out whether new wiring is necessary to fit a new layout, such as adding outlets to an island or moving your stove to the other side of the room.

2. Organize What You Need To Do

A common mistake is trying to do everything at once. For example, you might tear down your old cabinets the same day you hire someone to build new ones. This leaves you without cabinets until your new ones are finished.

Look at everything that needs to be done. Stagger the process so there’s a smooth flow. For example, if you want custom cabinets built, it’s a good idea to start here. Then, while the cabinets are being built, you can pick out new appliances.

The week before your cabinets are ready to be installed, consider what else needs to be done. If you’re remodeling your entire kitchen, you might need to have your floors redone and the walls painted. Schedule both of these to be done during that week. You’ll also want to hire an electrician for any major re-wiring that may need to be done before your cabinets are installed. Of course, you can save time and money on your kitchen remodel by skipping certain things. Instead of having to wait around, you only end up without a kitchen for about a week. That’s much easier to deal with.

3. Determine Appliance Spaces

what-to-consider-before-replacing-your-kitchen-cupboardsAlways determine how much space you’ll need for appliances before measuring for cabinets. Wanting that extra-large refrigerator after you’ve decided on cabinets that definitely won’t leave space for that will lead to a more complex kitchen installation.

Pick out the appliances you want first. If your kitchen can only support a certain type of layout, you’ll want to pick your cabinets first and then pick appliances that fit those spaces. This is usually a common issue when using stock cabinets as they don’t come in custom sizes.

4. Opt For Custom Cabinets

For an efficient kitchen installation, opt for custom cabinets. You won’t have the usual trouble that comes with trying to make things fit. After all, custom cabinets are designed to fit your space, not vice versa. Plus, you can get the appliances you want. Just make sure you give the cabinet builder your appliance dimensions and the kitchen layout to avoid any issues.

5. Clean Out Space

While you don’t have to take down your cabinets yourself, clean out your kitchen as much as possible before anyone arrives to work on it. This applies even if you’re doing everything yourself. Trying to constantly move things in and out of cabinets, move around chairs and stacking things in the corner just gets frustrating. Instead, make the kitchen installation easier by moving everything that’s not a major appliance or cabinet out of the kitchen.

6. Let Professionals Handle The Installation

In most cases, it’s easier and more efficient to let professionals handle the installation of your cabinets and even appliances. First, it’s easier on you as you’re not having to lift and tug heavy appliances and cabinets. Second, they’re less likely to make a mistake.

All it takes is a single measuring mistake to make you start over. For instance, you might measure 5″ from the window and start your upper cabinets when you should have measured 4″. That simple mistake might leave you without room for your refrigerator and having to take your upper cabinets down.

7. Install Cabinets First

Finally, install your cabinets first. Obviously, flooring and walls technically come first, but it’s easier to install cabinets before appliances. There’s more room to move around and the appliances aren’t getting scratched or dented.

Keeping Your Kitchen Cabinets Clean

When you invest in having expensive, custom kitchen cabinets built and installed in your home, your intention is to have them for many years. Keeping them looking brand new throughout their lifetime is important. Let’s review how you can keep your custom kitchen cabinets in top shape.

Get Down to the Basics

When you’ve spilled something on the kitchen cabinet, it is best to clean it right then and there. Take a lint-free cotton cloth that has been slightly dampened with water and wipe off the mess. If you’ve spilled something oily or greasy, you might need to use a simple solution of mild soap and water to wipe it down. One thing to keep in mind: do not use any harsh chemical-based solutions or detergents to clean the cabinets, this might damage the surface or ruin the finish.

Get Rid of Moisture

Moisture is the sworn enemy of the beautiful finish on your expensive kitchen cabinetry. To prevent damage due to moisture, make sure that you don’t keep any wet towels or rags hanging on the doors of your cabinets.  If you inadvertently spill water on the surface of the cabinet, make sure that you immediately wipe it down, and dry it.  Check for any dripping pipes under the sink and repair them.

Avoid Heat as Much as you Can

High heat in contact with the surface can cause the finish to discolor and the wood to start cracking.  Make it a practice to avoid placing any hot vessels on the surface of the cabinet.

Don’t Use Harsh, Abrasive Cleaners of Any Kind

Don’t use steel wool pads, scouring pads, or any other type of abrasive cleaning product to clean the messes off of your kitchen cabinet. These have a physical impact on the surface and finish of your custom-made kitchen cabinet.  Once marred, it becomes easy for liquid and food to enter into the wood and deteriorate it.

Remember that a wooden product will only last long if it receives maintenance and care. Good maintenance practices, keeping the above points in mind, will ensure that your kitchen cabinets are long-lasting and remain in pristine condition.

It truly doesn’t take as much work as you may think it does, no more than you normally do. Just be mindful of any messes you see and get them cleaned up immediately, and be smart with what you do decide to use as a cleaner. With proper care, your cabinets should keep looking truly fantastic for years to come.

The time has come.  You’ve finally decided that it’s time to update your kitchen cabinets.  You will no longer have to look at those awful, dated cabinets that you’ve been itching to get rid of since you moved in.  But you only get one chance to do this and you want to make sure you’re going to be happy with the results for years to come.  Maybe you are considering whether you should reface or replace your cabinets.  It’s best to know what’s involved before making that decision.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets
When refacing kitchen cabinets, the cabinet box stays, and the doors get replaced.  The front of the cabinet box will be refinished, often with a wood veneer, and new doors will be attached to give it a brand new look.  While the outside will get a facelift, once you open the doors you’ll be looking at the same shelving you’ve had in the past, so it’s best to consider whether that is something you can live with.  Often shelves have wear and tear from years of use and after thinking about it, customers decide they would rather replace everything.  While refacing is often seen as less expensive alternative, it’s fairly labor intensive so that isn’t always the case.
New Custom Kitchen Cabinets
The word “custom” often makes people think “I can’t afford that,” but it is surprising how competitive the cost can be compared to other options.  When homeowners weigh the benefits of having an entirely brand new product, designed exactly the way they want it, with space-saving and convenient features, the decision is often easy.
