If you’re in the market for new cabinets, you’ve probably wondered, are custom cabinets really worth the extra expense? Although store-bought stock cabinets may be cheaper, they don’t hold a candle to the beauty and personalized utility you gain from custom cabinets. Intrigued? Here are four benefits of buying custom cabinets.

1. Durability

Chances are the cabinets that were put into your home by the original builder are cheap stock cabinets constructed of plywood or particleboard and covered in veneer. They offer basic functionality, but they’re inexpensive and not really designed to last. So it’s not surprising if you find yours are wearing out, the doors no longer shut properly, or they’ve begun to look less attractive.

Unfortunately, such cabinets are installed more to save costs for builders than provide quality products to homeowners. And while you could replace them with more cheap stock options, you’ll find yourself in the same position in the not-too-distant future. In contrast, custom cabinets are made of much more durable materials. Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, for example, our custom cabinets are constructed from all wood, so they last much longer than cabinets made from composite materials.

2. Maximum Storage Space

When you purchase cheap plywood or particleboard cabinets, they typically come in preset sizes. That means you’re frequently left with gaps that cannot be used and items that simply don’t fit. Thankfully, custom cabinets eliminate these problems, since they are designed to fit your space and personal needs.

With custom cabinets, every inch of wall space is used, so there aren’t any useless gaps between cabinets. And because the cabinets are built to specification, you can create corner cabinets for large pans in your kitchen, custom-sized drawers for towels in your bathroom, custom hanging areas in your closet, and more. Eliminating wasted space means you’ll maximize your storage, a value you don’t get with cheap stock cabinets.

3. Personal Style

Your home is a reflection of your personality, and the last thing you want is for it to be boring and routine. Breaking free from the world of cheap stock cabinets opens up infinite possibilities to express your style.

In contrast to the limited colors, hardware, and styles available in stock cabinets, choosing custom cabinets allow you to put your personal stamp on every detail. Choose the species of wood, design, color, hardware, and accessories that fit your style. Whether you prefer your cabinets to look modern and sleek, evoke a European flair, or be completely eclectic, custom cabinets can make it happen.

4. Custom Utility

In the end, regardless of how beautiful our cabinets look, we need them to be useful. That’s where many stock cabinets fall short. Your kitchen cabinets are too small for your pots. You can’t fit all your appliances in your bathroom vanity. Your closet doesn’t have enough storage. Your entertainment center is overflowing. And your cleaning supplies are piled up in your laundry room. Sound familiar?

Fortunately, custom cabinets solve all these problems by providing the custom utility you need. There’s a nearly endless array of design options and accessories to choose from. For example, add slide-out bins for laundry, lazy Susans to store ties and scarves, or storage benches to stash your shoes. Whatever you need to store, you can find a custom cabinet solution that fits.

Remodeling your kitchen is exciting, but it can also be difficult to decide exactly what you want. Will a cozy country kitchen become the heart of your home, or is a sleek, modern kitchen more your style? Since you’re investing time and money into your remodeling project, you understandably want to make sure you choose a design you’ll love for years to come. Here are six design considerations to help you decide.

1. Overall Feel

First, you need to consider the overall feeling you want from your kitchen. Do you find sleek, clean, horizontal lines exhilirating? Or would you prefer a cozier, more rustic style that invites your family and friends to sit and have a long chat over meals? Do you like to have everything out of sight, or do you enjoy displaying pots, canisters, utensils, and decorative items?

If you would rather have a sleek, streamlined kitchen, a modern style is best for you. In contrast, if you’d like your kitchen to feel warm and cozy, a country style is a better choice.

2. Range

Your range is often a focal point in the kitchen, so you’ll want it to match the overall design. A cast iron range cooker is the quintessential choice for a country kitchen, but you can also create a country style with a brightly-colored range, or well-chosen neutral colors. On the other hand, stainless steel is the go-to option for a modern kitchen.

Remember, your range hood will also factor into the look of your kitchen. That’s why we offer custom range hoods and vents to match your cabinets and overall design.

3. Colors

Colors play a big part in creating the style you’re looking for. A modern kitchen typically uses black, grey, or white, in combination with stainless steel appliances. On the other hand, a country kitchen may make use of white elements for an airy feel, add brighter colors like blues or yellows, or focus on the wooden elements, by featuring glazed or stained maple, hickory, or oak.

4. Lighting

Your choice of lighting will also impact your kitchen’s style. Modern kitchens typically feature bright lighting that accentuates the sleek lines and smooth surfaces of the kitchen. Additionally, modern kitchens typically have few fixtures, so recessed lighting is often a good choice. Conversely, country kitchens often opt for warmer lighting, decorative fixtures, and plenty of natural light.

5. Accents and Hardware

Your choice of accents and hardware can make or break your look. If you prefer a minamalist style, a modern kitchen will work well for you. Modern kitchens typically include slim, sleek hardware and few, if any, accents. On the other hand, if you enjoy decorative accents and hardware, a country kitchen is the perfect choice. You’ll be able to add tons of charm through decorative accents and hardware like wrought iron fixtures, wire mesh, a butler’s sink, brass rails, and colored tiles.

6. Cabinets

Cabinets may be the most important design element in your kitchen. They take up much of your kitchen’s space, so getting them right is crucial. If you’ve decided that you prefer a modern, sleek look, you’ll typically want cabinets that have flat surfaces to create a streamlined effect. You may choose not to include visible hardware, or opt for thin, horizontal cabinet pulls that follow the same sleek lines as the rest of your kitchen.

More partial to a provincial or farmhouse atmosphere? Raised panel doors, decorative glass panels, and wire mesh will all add to the country appeal of your kitchen. Consider featuring a custom pantry with barn doors, or a cold larder to infuse your kitchen with old-time country charm.

Whether you choose to have a country kitchen or a modern one, Edgewood Cabinetry is here to help. We’ll work with you to help you design cabinets that fit perfectly with the style you want to achieve.  And with our plethora of custom options, you can be certain your kitchen cabinets will offer every functional element you need in a style you love. Home Office Cabinets

Your home office is a unique area. While it’s still part of your home, you want it to feel more professional, especially if clients come to your office.

While many people put their focus on their desk and chairs, the right cabinetry is just as important. Home office cabinets aren’t just for storage.

They help create a more professional tone and can change the entire look of the room. When picking your cabinets, use these five tips.

Storage Or Display

The first thing to consider is whether your home office cabinets are more for storing items or displaying them. If storage is your main concern, you’ll likely want cabinets with more sections, drawers and doors. This helps to keep your office more organized. This also creates a professional, library-style feel.

If you want a more airy feel, display style cabinetry works better. This style usually only has doors along the bottom shelves. The rest of the shelves are open to showcase favorite books, photos and equipment.

Compliment Your Home

Your home office doesn’t have to seem foreign compared to the rest of your house. To avoid feeling like you’re stepping into a bland cubicle or nameless corporate office, try matching your cabinets to the rest of your home decor. This creates a more welcome, relaxing environment.

This is a great approach if you don’t have a separate room for your office. Your cabinets blend into the decor, but still make your office area look professional.

Doors Or Open

This design choice mainly depends on how much privacy you want. Doors automatically give more privacy, which works well for storing client data. Of course, doors also help make an office look far more organized, even if it’s chaos behind the cabinet doors.

While doors often look more professional, open cabinets make it easier to quickly see and grab whatever you need. However, it’s easy for this style to look more like plain bookcases. To spice things up and make your office feel more unique, consider cabinets with custom spaced shelves. Each shelf block can be different sizes, creating a stunning look whenever anyone walks into the room.

Stained Or Painted

To truly set the tone of your office, you have to decide between stained or painted cabinets. Part of this choice depends on whether you want your office to look more like the rest of your home.

Stained cabinets give a classic, professional look. However, going with a brighter, painted color makes your office seem larger. If you’re running a business, having your cabinets match the color of your brand is also a nice touch and makes clients feel more at ease when coming to your home office.

Stained cabinets are best if you’re already using stained furniture, such as a desk. If you’re not using wooden furniture, painted cabinets work well, especially if you match them to any colors in your office furniture.

Available Space

Your cabinets shouldn’t take over your home office. Instead, they should fit naturally into the design. This means carefully considering how they’ll fit into your space and around your existing furniture. For larger spaces, a floor-to-ceiling cabinet might work well and help fill the space. However, smaller home offices might work better with shorter cabinets that also function as extra desk space.

If you’re sharing the space with someone else, having two sets of smaller cabinets versus one large set may be the best approach. This also allows you to use the cabinets to separate the space into two distinct areas.

kitchen design trends 2017-edgewood custom cabinetry

The entertainment industry may have been the forerunner of annual award shows, but every artist deserves kudos for a job well done. Designers and decorators are no exceptions. Recently, the Best in America Living Awards (BALA) announced what is currently trending in terms of interior design. Their list comes on the heels of the survey done by Houzz  (think of this one as the “people’s choice” award) predicting what homeowners should expect this year.

Whether you are starting from scratch or just updating your space, here is what you need to know:

Natural finishes, like wood flooring, have been popular for some time. We now see beams and wooden ceilings as design elements in both kitchens and family living areas. This board-and-batten look, along with shiplap, (thank you Joanna Gaines), creates a focal poi and adds a feeling of warmth to both traditional and contemporary room designs.

Customized organizational and storage solutions are high on the list of what’s new for 2017.   Wine cabinets, murphy beds, built-in recycle bins, and multi-tiered drawers reign supreme. Architects are incorporating benches, bookcases, nooks,  alcoves, and under-stair storage into new home designs and renovators are following suit.

Automation and smart appliances have moved into today’s kitchens. Thanks to the relative affordability of technology, we can have a refrigerator that composes a grocery list, an oven that can communicate with our smartphone and a Wi-Fi enabled coffee maker.

When it comes to color, Benjamin Moore has named “shadow” their color of the year. A dramatic blend of amethyst, lilac and gray, it is a shade that will contrast beautifully with the new look in appliances – black stainless steel. Speaking of color, we recently saw a farmhouse sink in apple green. Stunning.

Look for white-on-white-on-white kitchens, dark wood or black window and door frames, mixed metals, speckled granite, and quartz in the designs of 2017.

maple transitional kitchen-edgewood custom cabinetry

We asked three different people what the word transitional meant, in terms of room design and style.

Like so many things in life, it is all about the interpretation.

It is no surprise that we got three different answers.

So, we asked our own resident design expert, Pete. Surprise, he also gave us three answers.

Transitional design elements allow homeowners to enjoy the spaciousness of an open floor plan while maintaining order and definition.  The creative use of architectural details such as flooring, moldings, and columns give each area a cohesive look and a defined purpose.

A transitional piece of furniture, (or cabinetry), is simply a contemporary version of a classic piece. This console table,  for example, morphs a traditional living room basic into a modern marvel by substituting steel and glass for mahogany.

A transitional room design is a mélange of furnishings, fixtures, and fabrics combining the sustainability of classic traditional with a bit of modern sleek and wow!  This concept works in any room and is quite a show stopper in a kitchen.

To be effective, keep the color palettes neutral and the fabrics uncomplicated. This design style is more controlled than eclectic and a bit more upscale than shabby chic. Less is always better when it comes to the unexpected elements; a touch of restraint will result in a better balanced room.

A transitional kitchen design allows a great deal of flexibility to homeowners who do not want to commit to a single look. This kitchen design example combines an antique cabinet, rattan, classic white cabinets and ultra modern lighting for an exceptional look.

Create your own space. Lay the foundation with high quality, traditional cabinetry, then be innovative with color accents (“Eggplant” is trending right now)and mixed metals. Use granite or stone to inject some natural elements. Think chalkboard paint, turned legs, and corbels. Imagine copper farm sinks and sliding barn doors. After all, transitional is anything you want it to be. Be you.

Find your style, then come see Pete. He absolutely knows how to make it happen for you.

Ready to ditch that builder’s grade kitchen from 30 years ago?

Honey oak cabinets have seen their day and we are happy to shut the door on that era with you.

If you are ready to bid adieu to your old kitchen, Edgewood Cabinetry is ready to help you bring your design dreams to life.

Here are a few things you should consider before you shop for new cabinets

1. Size and layout of your current space. Not everyone has a large open space that can accommodate their dream kitchen. Consider whether you will need to make extra space by knocking down a wall or adding on to your house. If your area is adequate, do you like the current layout? Maybe your sink and stove are in the wrong places. A good contractor can assess a room and make recommendations for how to take advantage of your space.

2. The amount and location of natural and artificial light. We can’t all have giant windows flooding the kitchen with gorgeous natural light. Sometimes the windows are too far away or facing the wrong direction to take advantage of that. If you are short on light, consider using a lighter shade for your cabinetry. White is a classic choice, especially with southern architecture, but if that doesn’t sound appealing, a soft gray is a great alternative. If you love the look of stained wood, we have many wood grains and stains from which to choose. Even when a kitchen has plenty of natural light, you will still need to plan for task lighting for those times when you are doing up-close work. Be sure to ask about all of the under-cabinet lighting options when you visit a showroom.

3. Storage needs. Do you have a pantry closet? If so, your storage needs are primarily for dishes. If not, adding a pantry cabinet and dry goods storage is an excellent way to maximize your cabinet space. Either way, Edgewood Cabinets boasts a variety of built-in organization tools that can keep anyone’s clutter under control.

4. Personal style. Be sure to browse some pictures online to try to narrow down what really appeals to you. Do you love fancy millwork? Traditional may be your style. Are you a big fan of clean lines and a simple design? Contemporary may be a hit for you. We can make cabinetry to suit any style.

Before you shop for new cabinets, consider this:

Everyone’s kitchen need is different, so why go to the expense of replacing cabinets if you may not get precisely what you need from a set purchased at a big-box store? The great thing about custom cabinetry is that no matter the size, layout, lighting, storage needs, or personal style, Edgewood Cabinetry can make a kitchen work for you.

Discretionary dollars are hard to come by these days. The millennials are paying off student loans, the generation x’ers are paying ever – increasing college tuitions for their offspring, while often dealing with ill or aging parents and the baby boomers are silently marching into retirement and learning to live on a fixed income.

If custom cabinetry and high – end appliances are not in the budget now, think about adding a backsplash. This design element is a relatively simple and cost – effective quick fix that makes a huge visual impact.

While open concept kitchens offer vast counter space and work areas on islands and peninsulas, the wall space, typically, is minimal. In the overall scheme of re – design, backsplashes take up very little real estate. Working with a small area allows the homeowner to buy a minimal amount of high dollar materials to achieve a maximum “wow” factor.

For a backsplash, the look today is anything goes.

• Stone, marble, brick and granite can all be utilized on a wall. These materials contrast well with solid color counters, and add a touch of elegance.
• Metallic materials, like copper, stainless steel and even tin flashing add that sparkle and pair well with the industrial look that is trending today.
• Using colored back – lit glass gives an ultra-modern slant to any space, and is an excellent way to introduce a “pop of color”.
• Sustainable products, such as cork or bamboo are increasing in popularity.

When choosing the backsplash material for your project let your creativity and imagination run rampant. Inter – space hand painted artistic ceramic or porcelain tiles with the classic, and ever popular, white subway tile for a one of a kind statement. For a truly unique look, cover the wall area with fabric or photographs, and have a custom glass panel mounted over the wall.

The possibilities are endless. Contact us and let our design experts show you the way to a beautiful, and affordable, new space.

Edgewood Cabinetry-Kitchen Organization

We are impressed with the power of these kitchen design must haves, and you should be too. In fact, here’s how cabinetry design can change things for you.
• Perfect Design Details
Consider dark finishes with light-colored cabinetry for an elegant look. Sleek cabinet hardware is always featured in high-end designs. It’s not just about outside hardware. It’s what’s on the inside that counts too.
• Full Extension Drawers

Be sure to select full extension drawer hardware that allows drawers to slide open all the way, making it easier to get objects in and out. The benefit of full extension drawer hardware is convenience and extra storage. With this hardware, you can have larger and deeper drawers.

• Deep Drawers

Speaking of deep cabinet drawers, place two deep drawers right beside the kitchen range for easy access to large cooking pots and pans. Another option is to use one section for a trash and recycling pull-out drawer. While you’re at it, have a few extra drawers for hidden appliances.

• A Telescoping Towel Rack

Install the telescoping towel rack in a small cabinet right under the sink. No more towels left sitting on the countertop.

• Divided Storage

Internal drawer dividers are a great way to organize kitchen utensils or spices. Custom built dividers are better than organizers purchased separately, because they offer a more refined look.

• Doors

There are many styles of cabinet doors. Try a unique color or finish to add interest. Glass cabinet doors can offer the decorative look of a china cabinet or hutch when paired with small drawers at countertop level.

• Pull Out Pantry, a Walk in Pantry

Creative cabinet features, like a pantry, are coveted. The type of pantry you choose can be due to kitchen size or preference. If you have a smaller kitchen, try an 8-inch-wide pull-out pantry. If you have room to spare, build a walk-in pantry. Of course, you can have both!

• Tray Storage Cabinet

A tray storage cabinet is a space-saver. Use it to store racks, cookie sheets, pizza pans, and cutting boards within vertical dividers. Combine the tray storage cabinet with a roll-out drawer to see everything at once.

• Home Office/TV

A lot of people like a TV, computer, or cell phone charging station in the kitchen. You can easily design a workspace utilizing a few shelves and table top. This can be customized to the size of your kitchen.

Some of the items on this list might seem unattainable to you, but don’t worry. A professional with an intuitive understanding of how to translate these ideas into creative and practical design concepts is ready to help you with your dream kitchen. To talk more about this, or anything else, please contact us. Thanks.
