The backsplash, that tiled wall that sits between your counter and your cabinets, is truly the unsung hero of the kitchen.
How often do you look at it, really? Actually you look at it every day and probably never even give it a nod of acknowledgement. But did you know that an updated backsplash can be both aesthetic and functional?
To those in the know, backsplashes are an accent for a kitchen. They can be of any pattern you like. Canadian authoress Marie Porter decorated the backsplash in her kitchen with tiles that depicted the digits of pi. Other, more traditional folks match the general style of their kitchens. A modern kitchen might have bright and shiny tiles while a rustic kitchen might look better with a more earthy look. Of course, nothing screams “classic kitchen” like a black and white checkerboard pattern!
But the backsplash is more than just a pretty face. Functionally, a backsplash keeps grease and/or water and other materials from getting onto the walls. This helps prevent structural damage to both the wall and, over the long term, the material behind it. Backsplashes sit behind sinks and stoves, ready to take the hit. They are easier to clean off than a painted wall as most are made of stone or ceramics and can stand up to any amount of scrubbing. It seems these pretty little tiles that make your kitchen look good are tough cookies as well!
