Optimizing Bathroom Cabinet Storage

Bathrooms aren’t exactly built for storage. That’s why it’s important to find ways to optimize bathroom cabinet storage to get far more use out of the space.

From toiletries to bulky towels, there’s a lot to store. Most importantly, you want it all easily accessible. The last thing you need when you’re in a hurry is to dig around a crowded cabinet for toothpaste or a hairdryer.

Whether you have a tiny or large bathroom, make the most out of the space to store things neatly. The right cabinet features make all the difference.

Add Thin, Tall Cabinets

Often, bathroom cabinets are restricted to under and above the sink. Instead, add a free-standing cabinet that fits beside your vanity or even your toilet. These thinner, tall cabinets usually go from floor to ceiling. They’re easy to customize and fit a variety of items, such as toilet paper, extra towels and even organizers for cosmetics and other items. Add one or two of these and transform those wasted spaces into ways to maximize your bathroom storage space.

Use The Cabinet Door

One of the best ways to optimize bathroom cabinet storage is by using the cabinet door. Hate digging around in a drawer or a shelf for commonly used items? Hang them on the inside of your cabinet door. A simple magnetic board works great for hanging lightweight items on magnetic hooks or use magnetic locker accessories to store cosmetic brushes and smaller items. Or, use an over the door organizer for your hair tools, such as hair brushes, curling irons and dryers.

Add Shelves Under Your Sink

If you have a free standing or pedestal sink, make the most of the space under it. You don’t have to go with traditional cabinets either. Instead, add shelves that fit around the sink. Use baskets to store items and keep them neat and organized. Even a single shelf drastically optimizes your storage.

Utilize Adjustable Shelving

Organization is one of the biggest trends in bathroom cabinets. That’s why using adjustable shelving is the perfect way to optimize bathroom cabinet storage. Since items come in various sizes, use cabinets with adjustable shelves so you can easily organize the cabinets to fit the most items. Maybe you need a shelf that’s only five inches tall, but another that gives you 10 inches. Adjust the shelves to fit your needs.

Use Pull Out Organizers In Cabinets

House Beautiful lists a variety of pull out organizers to help you boost your bathroom cabinet storage. It’s far too easy for items to get pushed to the back. Then, you end up with cluttered mess and nothing fits right. Get more out of your limited space by using pull out organizers to easily organize items and reach them quickly, even if they’re at the back of the cabinet. These organizers can also double your space by adding small shelves and baskets.

Make Your Mirror A Cabinet

Your mirror doesn’t have to be just a mirror. Turn it into a cabinet. It doesn’t have to be a deep cabinet. Just add something thick enough to store medications, toothpaste and small items you might use on a daily basis. You can even change things up by having the shelves pull out from the sides of the mirror versus using the mirror as a door. This can help reduce fingerprints on the mirror too.

Add In A Small Trash Bin

If you have the space, add a small trash bin inside your bathroom cabinets. This clears up floor space and can even make room for a tall, thin freestanding cabinet. A creative approach is to attach the bin itself to your cabinet door so it pulls out when you open the door.

Use Tiered Shelving

Finally, make use of tiered shelving. For instance, you may need half of a cabinet divided in half with the rest open for taller items. Tiered shelving gives you small shelves along the side or corner without dividing the entire cabinet in half. You could also opt for floating tiered shelving. These is a great way to change up traditional bathroom storage while still optimizing bathroom cabinet storage.

Secret Laundry Room

When you’re short on space or just don’t want a dedicated laundry room, it might not always be easy to find the right place for your washer and dryer.

The good news is you already have the perfect room for them – the bathroom. Since laundry rooms typically need to be placed near a kitchen or bathroom, why not create a secret laundry room right in your bathroom?

Plus, it’s ideal since your dirty laundry is usually tossed in a hamper in or near the bathroom. This means less work to take your dirty laundry to your washer.

Transform A Closet

If you have a closet in your bathroom that’s wide enough for your washer and dryer, transform the closet into a secret laundry room. Yes, you’ll have to give up some storage space, but you could always add some vertical storage elsewhere in your bathroom to make up for it.

If the closet is tall enough, consider adding a rollout shelf between the two machines. Use it to sort clothes, fold clothes and even spot clean those really set in stains.

Of course, you still need a place to store your laundry supplies. If your machines set in far enough into the closet, add baskets to the inside of the door to store detergent, fabric softener, color catchers and any other supplies you need. You can also just store all this inside any bathroom cabinet as well.

Build Special Cabinets

If you don’t have a closet handy, don’t worry. Have custom bathroom cabinets built that match the rest of your bathroom, instead. To anyone who walks in, they just look like standard cabinets. What visitors won’t know is they’re hiding a secret laundry room.

In fact, you can create deeper cabinets that open up into their own mini-room. This allows room for shelves to store laundry supplies. You could even add a rack at the door for items that have to hang to dry versus using the dryer.

Create A Tiny Laundry Room

If you have ample space in your bathroom, actually create a secret laundry room using a divider wall. However, instead of an actual wall, use doors that look like your bathroom cabinet doors. They’ll look like floor-to-ceiling cabinets, but when you open them, they lead into a full room.

Add cabinets above or to the sides of your washer and dryer for extra storage. This is the perfect scenario if you also need to add a rack to hang clothes. To make the most of this, you may want to have cabinets or shelves around the top of the walls and add a rack underneath.

Give Up Cabinet Space

Low on space? Not a problem. You can still create a secret laundry room, but you’ll have to give up some of your cabinet space. If you have cabinets to the sides of your sink, use those for your washer and dryer. Think of it in the same way you add a dishwasher to your kitchen.

Yes, you’ll have to compromise on storage space, but you won’t have to create a dedicated laundry room. Adding tall, thin cabinets is a great way to add some extra storage without taking up much space.

Have A Laundry Island

For large bathrooms, you have quite a few options to create a secret laundry room. One of the more innovative solutions is a laundry island. It works the same way as a kitchen island. You have custom cabinets built that fit in an island in your bathroom. These just so happen to perfectly fit your washer and dryer.

You can add drawers or a cabinet with rollout shelves to the side of the washer and dryer to store all your laundry supplies. You may want to add a tall cabinet somewhere in your bathroom to hang clothes and store your hamper. This solution looks elegant and gives you extra counter space to get ready in the mornings or for a night out.

Trending Styles in Bathroom Cabinets

It’s always a good idea to check out trending bathroom cabinet styles when you’re considering a remodel or upgrade.

Bathroom cabinets are kind of a necessity for storing towels, beauty products and accessories. However, they don’t have to be limited to a bland cabinet under your sink. Instead, they can help create a trendy bathroom.

No matter how large or small your bathroom is (small bathrooms are trending, by the way), all these styles are sure to wow and even work well together.

1. Greige Becomes Front And Center

No, you read that right. One of the most popular colors for bathrooms and bathroom cabinets is greige. Whether it’s the color for the cabinets, countertop, flooring or walls, any neutral colored bathroom needs greige to be trendy. So what’s this amazing new color? It’s a surprisingly beautiful mixture of grey and beige. It actually looks much better than it sounds. Plus, it takes away that stark white while still making even the smallest bathrooms seem larger.

Ideally, you only want greige on one major component. For instance, if your cabinets are greige, your floor might be oak. If your walls are greige, you might have bold blue cabinets.

2. Natural Wood Tones Add Warmth

Your bathroom should be warm and inviting. After all, it’s not just a place to get clean, but to relax. Natural wood tones add warmth to any bathroom. A great place for this is your bathroom cabinets. A popular trend is to opt for natural wood tones as a contrast against greige or white countertops and walls. This also works well with the vintage and rustic themes that are currently popular for both the overall style and fixtures.

3. Marble Countertops Provide Luxury

Marble is well-known for adding a luxurious element when used as a countertop material. Everyone wants to feel luxurious while they bathe or get ready in the mornings. Adding a marble countertop adds that bit of luxury and it’s a classic that is always trending for bathroom cabinets.

As The Spruce points out, marble can be a bit expensive. This is why smaller bathrooms often splurge on marble for a tiny countertop. There are high-quality alternatives that give you the look without the expense or maintenance.

4. Floating Shelves Maximize Space

Not interested in bathroom cabinets at all? You’re not alone. However, you still need storage, right? One of the most creative trending bathroom cabinet styles is floating shelves. Staggered floating shelves hold knickknacks, towels, beauty products and more. Hooks on the front allow you to hang items or add a towel bar in the front for hanging your towels to dry.

Another option is floating cabinets. This allows you to easily store items on top or underneath. For instance, maybe you have a small foot bath. You could have a floating cabinet under your sink with space underneath for your foot bath.

5. Cabinets Focus On Organization

Bathroom cabinets aren’t just boxes anymore. Instead, it’s all about organization. During a trendy remodel, don’t be afraid to build in organizational elements. Roll-out shelves, mesh baskets on the insides of drawers and even roll-out shelves with pre-cut holes to hold beauty accessories, such as hair dryers, are all popular options.

Better Homes & Gardens has 15 great ideas to help you organize your bathroom cabinets in trendy, functional ways.

6. Tech Hides Inside Cabinets

High-tech bathroom cabinets shouldn’t be a surprise, but it has taken a while for this trend to become more mainstream. It’s not unusual to find outlets inside cabinets or a warming drawer for towels. If you really want to have a luxurious bathroom, you may even have a mini-fridge disguised as a cabinet for storing masks and makeup that need to be refrigerated or just to have a handy beverage while getting ready.

7. Bolder Colors Showcase Personality

The go-to for bathroom cabinets used to be all white, beige or grey. While all those colors are still trending, bolder colors are starting to appear. For instance, bold, bright cabinet colors stand out against white tiles and add personality. In fact, some experts argue that bolder colors actually make bathrooms seem more inviting than white and other neutral tones. Opt for colorful cabinets or a countertop to add a splash of color.

8. Dark Fixtures Provide Contrast

Shiny fixtures will probably never go out of style, but consider something more trendy, such as dark fixtures. Matte and dark fixtures look great for your sink and cabinet handles. Black and bronze are popular colors and match most any bathroom style.

9. Vanities Add More Function

Bathrooms should make it easier to get ready. This is where built-in vanities come in. Not only do they provide a place to get ready, but they also make your bathroom more functional. However, if you’re tight on space, you don’t have to skip your vanity.

Consider a floating cabinet made of just a few rows of drawers with a stool underneath. If you want extra storage, have a rolling box with a door or lid as the stool.

Bathroom Storage

You walk into a bathroom and what do you see? A cabinet under the sink and another cabinet to the side for towels.

Anything that doesn’t fit is stuck on the toilet or on metal racks here and there. What if you didn’t have to feel stuck with boring bathroom storage?

You don’t! Bespoke bathroom cabinets and shelves are here to rescue your bland bathroom and turn it into a room you’ll love to sit down in and relax.

Keep Cabinets Open

Hate buying all those random bathroom decorations? Let your bathroom storage be the decorations instead. Open cabinets let you decorate with colorful towels, creative toilet paper stacks and more. Plus, it’s always super easy to find exactly what you’re looking for.

By choosing a custom option, you’re able to size your cabinets to fit exactly what you need to store. Try a criss-cross design to store rolled-up hand towels in one spot. Use cubby holes to store hair brushes and styling supplies. Another open area might even have tiered shelves to store beauty supplies for quick access.

Create A Storage Bench

Larger bathrooms often have ample storage, but no place other than the toilet or a small chair at a vanity to sit. A more comfortable option is to have a cushioned bench that matches your bathroom decor. However, the bench doubles as an extra cabinet. Leave it open, have large drawers or stylish doors. The choice is completely yours!

Provide Storage Everywhere

You’re not limited to storage in a few set cabinets. Anywhere you have wall or floor space is a bathroom storage possibility. Bespoke cabinetry and shelving mean you can get as creative as you want. For instance, check out these inspiring ideas from Homedit. As you can see, there’s very little you can’t do. Plus, most of the storage ideas work as stylish design options.

Opt For Tiered Shelving

A popular bespoke option is tiered shelving. For instance, your bathroom counter might actually step up or down from your sink to provide tiered shelves for various items. You might keep some of your child’s most commonly used items on a lower shelf and your own items up higher.

Of course, thick floating shelves in a tiered design also work well. Use them for storage or just decorative items. To make them even more useful, place hooks on them to store towels, hang belts, attach styling tools and more.

Design Based On Your Theme

Pre-fabricated bathroom storage isn’t that exciting. In fact, it’s rather bland at best. You get a few simple options and that’s it. It’s hard to have a theme based on that. Bespoke bathroom storage allows you to create designs based on a set theme. Want something more modern? Get custom sized black cabinets with white drawers and doors.

Suddenly, your storage is transformed into a style that makes your bathroom stand out. Why not give it some personality? After all, think about all it has to go through every day.

Think Up Versus Below

Most of the time, you have a medicine cabinet and then storage below the sink or counter. What about all that vertical space above the counter? Start thinking vertically. Just like with the image at the beginning of this post, bespoke cabinets designed to fit your exact space sit on the counter to provide easy access to the items you use most.

While you don’t have to give up your storage below the counter, your bathroom looks far more innovative with storage that takes advantage of all the extra wall space above your bathroom counter.

Try Hidden Storage Hacks

Another thing to consider that goes beyond traditional bathroom storage is hidden storage ideas. You’ll definitely need custom cabinetry for many of these hacks. For instance, you could have a thin drawer with built-in cups to store brushes, combs, extra toothbrushes and more. You could even have a drawer with a second drawer built-in. From the outside, you see one beautiful drawer, but when you pull it out, a second drawer gives you twice the storage. Brit+Co has several great ideas that are both stylish and easy to customize to your bathroom.

Bathroom Cabinets

Unlike your kitchen, your bathroom constantly has to deal with moisture in the air from showers and baths.

Since it’s a more humid environment, you have to think carefully about what types of materials to use and how to care for your bathroom cabinets.

With proper care, it’s easy to control how moisture affects your cabinets and ensure they last for years to come.

Humidity + Wood = Damage

Humidity isn’t exactly wood’s best friend. In fact, your bathroom cabinets hate all those hot showers you take. Wood expands as humidity increases. As the humidity lessens, the wood starts to shrink again. It’s important to note that if a room is too dry, this can actually cause the wood to wear out faster too.

Even finished wood is affected, though it will last longer than unfinished varieties. The closer your bathroom cabinets are to your shower or sink, the more likely they are to be damaged. While your kitchen cabinets can be affected, your bathroom usually sees more fluctuations in humidity and temperature than your kitchen.

While it’s impossible to prevent humidity fluctuations in your bathroom, it’s still possible to take precautions to make your cabinets last longer. For instance, choosing the right material and reducing humidity both help add years to your cabinets.

Choosing The Right Material

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that some materials react more severely to prolonged exposure to humidity. In most cases, the cheaper the material, the more likely it is to react negatively to humidity and steam.

Before you choose a material for your bathroom cabinets, consider the following:

  • Particle board – More cost-effective, but is highly sensitive to temperature changes, humidity and steam. Boards break down much faster and will need to be replaced sooner.
  • MDF – Stronger than particle board, but swells when it comes into contact with water. Long periods of humidity could cause permanent damage.
  • Plywood – High-end plywood holds up well to humidity and doesn’t swell like most other options. It’s one of the best choices for bathroom cabinets.
  • Solid wood – Humidity may result in warping of the wood and/or paint, but it’ll still last much longer than particle board or MDF.

It’s important to weigh the benefits with the costs. Plywood and solid wood will cost you more, but they’ll last longer. If you’re careful, particle board and MDF can last for years and they cost less. If you’re not careful, you’ll be replacing your cabinets in no time.

Reducing Humidity

If you’re not ready to remodel your bathroom cabinets, you can still make your existing cabinets last longer by reducing the humidity in the room. No, you don’t have to give up taking a refreshing shower when you first wake up or a relaxing bath before bed.

Some great ways to cut down on humidity include:

  • Using a dehumidifier, especially when showering.
  • Lower the temperature of your shower or bath. This reduces the amount of steam in the room and the overall humidity.
  • Open your bathroom window to let out steam and moisture.
  • Limit the length of your showers to reduce humidity.

When you do notice steam and moisture on your cabinets, wipe them off with a towel. When moisture lingers on the surfaces, it causes more damage.

Controlling Temperatures

Temperature differences often come with humidity. After all, your bathroom gets noticeably warmer when you shower. Hotter temperatures often lead to more humidity, especially in warmer climates. To reduce humidity in this instance, you may need to use a fan to cool the room.

Showering with warm versus hot water helps to reduce the temperature in your bathroom. Your bathroom cabinets will love you for it and you’ll love how much longer they last.

Whenever you hear the word “trend” when it comes to interior design, it’s wise to be a little wary.

After all, the word implies something that could be short-lived, and you probably don’t want to invest a sizeable chunk of money into something that’s going to look dated in a couple of years.

That said, your main concern should always be functionality. You need a bathroom that’s going to work for you and your family and the way you live.

The key to investing in a trend is figuring out how well it actually works. For example, several years ago, no bathroom remodel was considered complete without a whirlpool tub. Then people figured out that they actually took a lot more showers than baths, and the trend changed to roomy showers with built-in benches that facilitate washing your feet or shaving your legs. So evaluating a trend has to be about more than just how a bathroom feature looks. It’s got to work for you now and in the future. Here are a few bathroom trends that promise to look great in your bathroom and perform great for years to come …

36″ High Bathroom Vanities with Quality Workmanship

For years, 30″ was the standard height for a bathroom vanity, but that meant stooping over, even for people of average height. The new trend is 36″, which is a more reasonable — and comfortable — height for everyone except the smallest members of your family, who of course, will continue to grow as the years go by!

As far as the cabinetry goes, people are moving away from big-box bathroom vanities to quality cabinetry that will stand the test of time. Details like deep drawers and pull-out shelves are popular because they make life easier, and add usable storage, which is something every bathroom — large or small — always seems to need more of.

“Comfort Height” Toilets

Higher toilets are making a debut in more and more new bathrooms and bath renovations than ever, partly because of the aging-in-place concept of making your bathroom user-friendly as you age, and partly because they’re generally more comfortable to use no matter what your age.

Hidden Toilets

It’s becoming more common today for more than one person to use the bathroom at the same time, given our hectic morning schedules. Not only does a “water closet” or half-wall hide the least attractive element in the bathroom, but it also provides a little extra privacy when using the toilet.

Luxurious Showers

As mentioned, showers are the new stars of the bathroom, but they’re not the fiberglass stalls of the past. Tile is a must, as are frameless doors and curbless bottoms that facilitate entering and exiting (another aging-in-place must). A built-in bench and good lighting not only enhance the look of the shower, but also make practical sense. Double showers are popular, as are multiple shower heads or a traditional shower head plus a moveable shower head for rinsing hair or legs and feet.

You can create the bathroom of your dreams that is not only trendy, but practical too, and practicality is always worth the investment!

Experienced and seasoned real estate agents advise home sellers that upgrades and renovations make a big difference to home buyers.

They often state that luxury bathrooms and kitchens are what buyers want most.

A recent first-ever Remodeling Impact Report, by the National Association of Realtors and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, proves it true.

Bathroom renovations ranked third in projects that appeal to home buyers. Only kitchen upgrades and complete kitchen renovations listed higher for desirability. Adding a new bathroom ranked fifth. This makes bathrooms and kitchens the most important areas to focus on when considering upgrades or renovations.

Even better, bathrooms and kitchens are the top four for increasing the value of a home resale. An estimated bathroom renovation costing $26,000 adds $15,000 to a home’s price, or a 58 percent recoup of the job cost. Adding a bathroom with an estimated cost of $50,000 increases the home’s value by $26,000, or 52 percent of job cost.

Remodeling magazine confirmed the return on investment in their 2016 Cost vs. Value report. They examined 27 common remodeling projects, and their finding showed a luxury bathroom remodel or luxury bathroom addition has a 56 percent and 58 percent cost-value ratio.

Moreover, Remodeling magazine found the demand and value for such remodeling projects have increased since 2015. They stated, “Bigger and more expensive projects, rising new-home prices, curb appeal, and energy efficiency all contributed to a slight gain in remodeling projects’ payback at resale, the 2016 Cost vs. Value report shows.”

It’s time for a bathroom remodel if you frequently shudder when you really take a hard look at your bathroom. Does that avocado green countertop give you nightmares? Is the vinyl floor so beat up you can’t get it clean any more? Or is the mirror scratched and the frame so dinged up you can hardly see to comb your hair? Then it’s definitely time!

Then the hard part comes – figuring out how to give your remodel character as well as functionality.

There are the standard items needed in every bathroom, sink, tub/shower, commode, and a mirror. But the way these items are arranged and the choice of products and colors used for each item greatly affects the charm, function and pleasure you feel every time you use the room. Here are a few things to consider.

  • Start with the basics. How big is the room? Can fixtures be rearranged, without huge plumbing expense, to allow a better layout? Is there a need to design for current or future handicapped accessibility?
  • Shop, shop, shop!! Visit home improvement stores, watch remodeling programs on TV or online. Buy bath remodeling books and magazines and flag or cut out pictures of room you love. Before too long, you will discover what colors, layouts, fixtures and amenities you like.
  • Visit with a remodeling contractor, like Edgewood Cabinetry, to begin to refine your dream and set a budget. This might even be your first step, but it helps to have some kind of vision in mind before you seek more help.
  • Think about how this bathroom remodel will fit in with the rest of your home. While you want the room to be up-to-date and fresh, unless you are planning to do the rest of the house, or have already done so, your re-do may just look out of place.
  • The things that give the rest of your home character, artwork, mirrors, photos, window and wall coverings, etc., should also be carried into your new bath. Even the things that are mainly functional in purpose, like mirrors and cabinets, should reflect your taste and personality.
  • Don’t be afraid to use something a little quirky. Add a shower curtain with a large floral print in corals, lime green and turquoise to be the focal point against white subway tiles in your shower. Just don’t try to use several bold patterns or they will only look busy and confusing.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started and narrow down your goals and requirements. Then contact us for expert planning and advice that will make your dream come true, with exceptional quality and within your budget.

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen with new cabinetry, you have to keep in mind that color does matter in the final result.

Sometimes you can be thrown off by color based on lighting, and that can lead to some disastrous situations after a remodel. In order to avoid an expensive re-do on your kitchen, you need to take some time on matching your colors. In the matching process, you have to tie the color of the wood you use, your countertop color, your backsplash color, plus the colors of the wall and floor all together so it makes sense based on what you’ll actually see.

Matching Your Countertop Color with the Wall

One of the best ways to match color schemes is to take the color of your countertop and match it with a piece of your wall color. House Painting Tutorials points out this can be challenging because how you see the color of your countertop sometimes looks different from a particular angle or in different lighting situations. That’s why you should always match the two together at an angle to see how you’ll be viewing it when everything is in place at home.

Looking at them from this perspective, you gain a better sense of reality in the color matchup. The same can be done by taking a piece of the wood you’ll be using in your cabinetry and matching it with a piece of your wall, countertop, or flooring.

Finding Overall Color Balance

The general rule of thumb is that if you have extreme contrasts in your color scheme, you could throw your kitchen into a bit of colorful chaos. While some creative people do that anyway, you have to think of what your guests will think when entering your new kitchen. Considering the kitchen is a place where your guests may spend some considerable time, you can’t expect they’ll all love a wildly divergent color scheme.

You’re much better off thinking in relational terms when it comes to color. If you decide to use bright red on your walls, for instance, you might want to pick a rust or dark reddish color as your cabinet color. The same goes for your floors and backsplash.

Thinking of Lighting and Color Tone

As mentioned earlier, lighting can play tricks on the eye when attempting to match up colors. Too dark of lighting can ultimately make darker color schemes look overly drab in a kitchen. Study your lighting carefully before committing to your kitchen remodel and see whether a lighter color scheme would help brighten things. All it takes is a lighter color on your cabinets and walls to lighten up a room and give a psychological feeling of brightness.

No matter what colors you decide to use in your new kitchen, we can help build it for you here at Edgewood Cabinetry. We understand how color matters in the final result, and we’ll work with you to assure your kitchen remodel color scheme works with your lighting and the reality of your surroundings.
