Why You Need A Cabinet Plan

A cabinet plan is a foundation for creating cabinets you’ll love. Whether it’s your kitchen, bathroom or any other room, it’s vital to plan out everything from the size to layout. Installing cabinets isn’t as straightforward as putting some boxes with doors against your walls. To get the most function and space, you have to plan out the finer details. Before you start installing cabinets or have someone build your cabinets, create a plan to ensure you’re getting the cabinets you actually want and need.

Easier To Get It Right The First Time

Why You Need A Cabinet PlanWhat’s easier – putting in cabinets and then having to re-do them because they don’t fit your vision or getting it right the first time? You save both time and money with a cabinet plan. You plan out every detail before anyone even starts to build your cabinets. You avoid costly surprises, the cabinets fit perfectly and they work the way you want.

Plus, if you have to constantly remodel what you already have, you risk damaging other parts of the room. For example, in a kitchen, constantly changing cabinets in and out can damage your appliances.

Design Around Your Layout

The available space depends on the layout you want. For instance, in an office, you’d want to design your cabinets based upon your desk placement, any windows and how easily you need to reach them from where you sit. The same is true for kitchens. In this case, you typically design a cabinet plan based on the most efficient layout for your needs.

Plus, you might want to change your current layout. For example, a more open layout, which affects the type of cabinets and where they’re placed, makes a smaller kitchen feel more open and larger.

Build For Function And Storage

Edgewood Cabinetry cabinetsWhile you can add storage functional and storage features later, it’s often a hassle. Instead, use a cabinet plan to layout how your cabinets will function and how you’ll store items. For instance, you’d design laundry room cabinets based around the items you store and how easily you want to access them. You might have drawers between your washer and dryer for smaller items and a Lazy Susan to quickly grab detergents from a larger cabinet. You’d likely also add a stow-away ironing board as part of one of your cabinets or in between them.

Consider everything you need and how you’ll use the cabinets. When they’re custom-designed for you, they’ll be far more useful.

Better Fit The Room

Cabinets should be designed to better fit your room. This not only looks better, but gives you more space to move around. That’s why custom cabinets often work best. You can opt for thinner, wider, taller and shorter cabinets than you’d get with stock cabinets.

Plus, with a cabinet plan, you can easily visualize where to place cabinets to provide easy access and fit with your room’s theme. For example, if you’re installing a kitchen island, the center of the room might not always be what’s best. Instead, you might place it further away from your refrigerator, but closer to your stove for easy prep without getting in the way of everyone coming to grab something out of the refrigerator.

Match Your Budget

The last thing you want is to suddenly go over budget in the middle of a cabinetry project. A cabinet plan helps you layout every detail. You can even plan the hardware. Quickly see which parts cost the most and where you can cut back if necessary. For instance, choosing a different countertop might be all you need to get back on budget. Or, you might opt for a simpler backsplash that’s easier to install.

Whatever room your cabinets are going in, you need a plan. This helps you get the cabinets you really want and need while still staying on budget.

Edgewood Cabinetry cabinets

Are you looking to pick up the clutter around your home? Most homeowners often complain about a lack of ample storage to accommodate all their items while maintaining the aesthetics of a room. What they don’t realize is that there’s much more storage than meets the eye.

Storage space often comes at a premium! If adding more cabinets is not an option, it’s essential to make the best of the existing space. It’s possible to improve the home organization and increase storage space by tinkering with the custom cabinets. How so? Here are simple adjustments to improve your storage space drastically.

Useful Cabinet Organization Ideas

Edgewood Cabinetry cabinetsModify Double Door Cabinets: Most double door cabinets have a divider (center stile) between the doors. The stile takes up valuable storage space that could otherwise make the cabinet more spacious and accessible. Possible ideas to get rid of the divider include detaching it vertically and fixing it one of the doors (i.e., creating a dummy stile that opens with the door) or installing new double doors that meet.

Organize and Manage Wires: Having wires and cable lying around haphazardly is a painful eyesore – not to mention the risk of tripping accidents and health issues due to dust bunnies! When it comes to wire management, the trick lies in creativity. Think out-of-the-box to find a solution that works best for your space. For items that are rarely unplugged, such as desktops, consider threading the cables along the underside of a wooden surface. Outlets for highly portable devices such as mobile phones should be easily accessible – inside a drawer, on the sidewall, or a countertop.

Sometimes the Places You’d Never Think of are The Best

Cabinet Space Above the Refrigerator: Most pre-made overhead cabinets above the fridge are either too small or too deep for easy access. This odd size and location lead to a waste of valuable storage space. Consider removing the small unusable cabinet and installing new cabinetry that encases the refrigerator. It is more aesthetically, desirable, and easy to reach. Another great idea is to use vertical dividers for the storage of kitchen appliances such as plates or trays

Keep Your Garbage Can Out of Sight: Garbage cans are a necessity in any kitchen – but that does not mean they’re allowed to make the kitchen messy. Stash unsightly trash cans in a ‘makeshift trash drawer’ under your 36-inch countertop drawer.

The Ultimate In Cabinet Accessories

When you think about cabinets, you might not immediately think of anything other than boxes with doors and some drawers. However, cabinet accessories let you get so much more from your custom kitchen cabinets.

Forget about just having to make do with general storage. Instead, use cabinet accessories to store what you need in a much more convenient way.

Just think about how great it would be not to have to just cram everything on a shelf or in a drawer. You can finally organize your kitchen just the way you want.

Pull Out Trash Cans

The Ultimate In Cabinet AccessoriesIf you don’t want anyone seeing your trash can and/or recycle bin, hide them behind a cabinet door. Your kitchen looks clean and neat. Nasty trash is securely hidden behind a cabinet door that looks just like all the rest. It’s a great way to store your trash cans out of the way. You might want to put a towel near the door so you can wipe your hands off before opening and closing the cabinet door.

Hinged Shelves

One of the more unique cabinet accessories is hinged shelves. These shelves typically look like their own cabinet, but without a door. They have one or more shelves. As you pull them out to the side using the hinged feature, you can easily reach other smaller items stored on the shelves behind this one. These are ideal for storing smaller items, such as spices or commonly used accessories.

Roll-Out Shelves

Roll-out shelves are always a great idea. They’re one of the most popular cabinet accessories because they make it easier to reach things. In fact, you can customize these roll-out shelves to organize pots and pans with easy to use racks. Then, the shelves work similarly to a drawer. Roll-out the shelf, get what you need and you’re done. This is just one way to maximize your kitchen storage.

Drawer Organizers

Drawer organizers are nothing new and they can be used to increase your storage space. You don’t have to stick with just those plastic compartment organizers either. Instead, add a peg system to easily stack plates, lids and containers. For deeper drawers, add racks to store pots and pans. You can even have wooden dividers to use baking pans, muffin tins, cutting boards and more. Good Housekeeping has some great ideas to inspire you.

Spice Rack Pull Out

It’s easy for spices to get lost in cabinets. Shelves are usually too tall to store them effectively without wasting space. A Lazy Susan might not the right choice either. If you have the space, add a spice rack pull out cabinet. The cabinet is only slightly wider than your average spice container. The cabinet pulls out for you to neatly arrange your spices on long shelves. You can easily store dozens of spices and hide them out of sight in the space between two other cabinets.

Corner Cabinet Pull Outs

Corner cabinets seem like a great idea until you actually try to use them. Then, they become a challenge. How do you reach all the way back into the corner? What about the stuff stored along the back edges? A functional kitchen shouldn’t be difficult to use. That’s why it’s a good idea to corner cabinet pull-outs. Shelves pull out at various angles so you can reach everything easily. These are often called blind corner pull-outs.

Lazy Susans

The most well known of all cabinet accessories is the Lazy Susan. If you can’t reach something, add a Lazy Susan to simply spin everything around to get to what you need. You see these often when it comes to corner cabinets or for storing smaller items like seasonings and spices. They’re a classic for a reason, so don’t be afraid to use them.

Pull Out Pantry

Pantries are great, but it’s not always easy to reach what you need. Pull out pantries work much like a pull out spice rack, but on a much larger scale. Think of these are smaller pantries that fit between other cabinets. You pull it out to reach larger items, such as drinks, cleaning supplies, jars, cans, cereals and much more. Of course, you can always opt for pull out shelves and baskets to use in your larger pantry.

Should You Take a Shot at Your Own Woodworking?

Woodworking, especially for smaller jobs, is not rocket science. It is something you can easily do with the right tools and safety knowledge. It is pretty exciting to look at your work after you’re done and admire what you have been able to do. But we must say, difficulty increases quickly and their is a lot of work that you should just leave to the pro’s. Like when it comes to custom cabinets, you’re better off just paying us to make them for you. DIY woodworking does have benifits in certain cases, and when you already have all of the tools that you need on hand.

Save Money on Small Repairs

Saving money is usually the motivation behind many DIY projects, not just woodworking. When it comes to building cabinets, the cost can be high depending on the type of wood being used and the size of the cabinet. So if you have the knowledge to do the small parts of woodwork in your house then you can definitely take a shot at doing the work yourself. However, for bigger projects, it is best that you can ask for help from professional woodworkers like Edgewood cabinetry.

Save Time on Small Fixes

Sometimes you can get something fixed faster than the time it would take to call a pro. Professionals can have many bookings which make them unavailable for your work. Instead of living with whatever you broke, you can try and fix what you can. If you can fix it yourself, great! If not, you’ll have a pro out there soon enough!

A Fun Learning Opportunity

edgewood custom cabinetry ClaytonDoing woodworking projects by yourself gives you a platform to learn everything you need to know about it. You get to learn a lot of things that you never would otherwise, understanding how things really work. Even if you end up hating it, at least you gave it a try and now you know! There is some sweating involved and even some injury, but nothing feels quite like finishing a projcet and seeing your final product.

Doing your own woodwork is a worthwhile experience as long as you have the right tools and basic safety knowledge. Do remember shoddy work will have to be re-done professionally. Trying does not hurt. However, for bigger jobs, your safety and the quality of the work needs a professional. It will cost you way less to have custom cabinets made than for you to try and learn yourself with all of the trial and error that would be involved.

Every room in the house matters; whether bedroom, dressing room, kitchen, or living room. Edgewood cabinetry comes in to help you add taste to every corner of your house. Kitchens, generally considered the heart of the home,  are loved for the variety of customizations and different designs options you can fit into them! Just be sure to keep the rest of your home interior in mind when designing the kitchen, you want it to fit in with the rest of the house.

A well-designed kitchen not only saves you time any un-nessicary headaches, it just makes it more comfortable to operate in the space. Having custom cabinets in the kitchen only improves your situation. Usually, Edgewood cabinetry’s custom kitchen cabinets are designed to the homeowners exact taste. Most people want everything to be in the right place and neatly stored away. Custom made kitchen cabinets can be expensive, but there are multiple advantages to designing them to fit into YOUR space.

  1. Offers multiple options.

When it comes to Edgewood cabinetry, the sky is the limit.  Since it is designed for your space and pace, you choose the type of wood, style, and finish of your cabinets. You can even decide on the specific storage/shelving hardware you want installed! Working directly with the cabinet designer/builder is a great way to guarantee that you get exactly what you envisioned. If you get a pre-built you may get kinda what you want, but it will never exactly meet your desires.

Although contractors aim to do quality work, jobs can quickly end up shoddy at times just due to miscommunication and simple errors that result from that. They may not capture the essence of your design, they may not even give you the options you want! At the end you very well may be disappointed, but it is too late to do much unless you want to start over (hint: you probably don’t). Dealing with the cabinet manufacturer gives you full control of the decisions to be made regarding the cabinets. Edgewood cabinetry manufacturers assist you in deciding the style, colors of floor and wall. From step 1 to step 100, they’re there! Think of it like this, for your project you’re the project lead. You decide what things look like, where they go, and pretty much everything directly dealing with you!

There are endless modifications possible for your designs. You can always change things around before they’re actually made to fit your family lifestyle and aesthetic value better.  Just make sure things are in a place where you like them when the process starts to wind down, last minute changes can be frustrating and you want the process to be as easy and nice as you can.

  1. Saves Space!

Who doesn’t need more space in their home? I know I’d love just a little bit more space in some areas. Custom cabinets can help you to save a ton of space in the house, mainly the kitchen you’re installing them in. If they’re designed right, they can fit a ton of things in them, saving you both from visible clutter and just general annoyance while trying to rememeber where something is that you had to move due to lack of space. After doing away with the soffits, monopolize the area and install a tall cabinet. Semi-custom cabinets go as high as 36,” but custom cabinets can be as high as 102”. With semi-custom cabinets, a lot of space is left horizontally, but customized customs maximize every bit of space possible. That’s the key with this whole custom cabinet thing, you’re maximizing your space and using it how YOU want to at the same time. Pretty amazing deal right?

  1. Perfect craftsmanshipHandcrafted Living Space

It takes a certain level of both craftsmanship and artistic style/ability to make a good set of custom cabinets. The craftsmen often plan on where drawers and such will go while even drawing up your cabinets, making sure no detail is left behind. Pieces of wood are cut to size and fit together, ensuring that they can slide right into place. The craftsmen prefer to use merged joints and dowels instead of nails, they give you a more clean overall look and make both assembly and dis-assembly easier.

  1. Environmental friendly

Ever heard, take care of mother nature, and she will take care of you? Custom cabinets are made using wood, a non-poisonous, semi-renewable, and biodegradable material. By working directly with the cabinet manufacturer, you can always ensure that the wood used has no adverse impacts on the environment. Some bulk-cabinet makers will use lower quality materials and things that may even contain dangerous compounds. You don’t want that around your friends and family all the time, or even at all. Materials matter almost as much as craftsmanship, make sure you’re getting the best.

Conclusion

A well-organized space preserves your time, energy, and looks more appealing that the opposite. Custom cabinets assist you in getting and keeping your place organized. There are various storage space options in customized cabinets.  They help in altering the look of the space; modern cabinets can be modified to match the interior of the house also!

Cabinets are prepared in three ways: custom built, semi-custom built and stock. All three are different and understanding the structure of each is crucial in helping you determine which one is ideal for your situation.

Stock Cabinetsopen cabinet

These sizing standards start from 9 inches all the way to 48 inches with 3-inch increments from one size to the next.  There are also specifications on the base and height dimensions for vanity, wall and tall cabinets.

Because they aren’t not made following a client’s order, there is a limit on the sizes that you can you can choose. Additionally, stock cabinets don’t provide room for modifications so you are stuck with what you buy irrespective of whether it meets your specific needs.

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are usually made by local cabinetmakers some of whom cabinets other than in kitchen-edgewood cabinetry-clayton ncsell semi-custom and stock cabinets. Custom makers often have shops furnished to produce cabinet boxes, drawers, face frame and doors.

Custom cabinets give a client the freedom to construct and design the exact specifications that they want. There is no standard sizing for custom cabinets as you would find with stock ones. Sizes are produced based on what is needed. This means that the interior of the cabinets can be open and without partitions and this provides greater capacity for storage and flexibility.

There are limitations to custom cabinet making but generally, they offer more options and a wider range of designs to choose from. It is important to note that custom cabinets cost more than the semi-custom and stock. The value you get from custom cabinets, however, is worth every penny and more.
