Kitchen cabinets open shelving

Open shelving in the kitchen is currently very popular among home builders and kitchen remodelers.

Websites, like Pinterest, offer numerous photos of kitchens with open shelving.  You may be wondering what the advantages of this relatively new kitchen design are.

Decorative

Open shelving offers multiple opportunities for decorating in the kitchen.
•    Bring color into your kitchen by adding paint or paper to the back of the cabinets.  This color will not only add style to your kitchen but give your cabinets the appearance of added depth.
•    Showcase items such as spices, olive oil or other decorative pieces. Display a collection such as cookbooks.
•    Your bowls and plates stacked in the cabinets become art on display.
•    Show your personality in your kitchen which is traditionally a very functional space.

Functional

•    You will have easy access to everything while you are cooking in your kitchen.
•    No need to open and close your cabinet doors 1,000 times a day.
•    Kids, family members and guests will no longer have to ask ‘where are the glasses?’ because they will easily be able to spot them.
•    You will not lose items or forget about them and will not waste time searching for something.  Everything will be apparent.
•    You won’t feel inclined to shove things into the cabinet but will be inspired to stay neat and organized.
•    Since you won’t have to worry about closing the doors your storage space will increase.

Bottom Line

•    Open shelving will make your room look and feel bigger.
•    Cost will be reduced due to less wood required.

cabinet shims

Cabinet installation can be a major problem when you suddenly find out that your floors aren’t level or the walls in your kitchen aren’t plumb. That’s a frustration those of us here at Edgewood Cabinetry sometimes run across in various homes. However, there’s some ways to fix that using a little ingenuity and available tools to deal with the unexpected.

Dealing With Uneven Walls

While we’ll assure to measure your walls before installing your cabinets, uneven walls can still be a problem at the last minute due to certain circumstances. Many times we’ll just use a level to take note of how uneven a wall is beforehand and build the cabinet to align properly with the uneven shape.

Another trick after the fact is to use scribes that help align the cabinet to the wall. These are usually built in automatically to cabinets for alignment purposes. With the scribes located along the lip of the cabinet in back, they’re used as a marker to help shape the cabinet properly. Scribe tools can help with this and work similarly to a protractor. By drawing a pencil line near the area where the scribes meet the wall, you can use a saw on the cabinet to shape it so it fits in place.

Dealing with Uneven Floors

Placing shims under your cabinet is the ultimate answer to helping deal with uneven floors. This might require some measuring beforehand to get the cabinet in place correctly up against a wall. It also may require more scribes along the wall to make sure everything is in alignment. You may also have to use a leveler if the cabinet doesn’t line up with the wall. Plus, a saw may have to be used again to shape the cabinet so it lines up correctly.

Old House Web reminds that base cabinets should be conjoined with screws so there’s no gaps in between. This can cause additional problems with alignment when a floor or walls are misshaped.

Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we’ll make sure all these steps are done so it won’t mean going back to the drawing board after construction is done. Our master craftsman, Pete Rafferty, has had years of experience dealing with every uneven wall and floor, plus more. Most of all, he’ll make sure your cabinets look exactly the way you want them on the exterior as much as how they fit.

bathroom remodel custom

It’s time for a bathroom remodel if you frequently shudder when you really take a hard look at your bathroom. Does that avocado green countertop give you nightmares? Is the vinyl floor so beat up you can’t get it clean any more? Or is the mirror scratched and the frame so dinged up you can hardly see to comb your hair? Then it’s definitely time!

Then the hard part comes – figuring out how to give your remodel character as well as functionality.

There are the standard items needed in every bathroom, sink, tub/shower, commode, and a mirror. But the way these items are arranged and the choice of products and colors used for each item greatly affects the charm, function and pleasure you feel every time you use the room. Here are a few things to consider.

  • Start with the basics. How big is the room? Can fixtures be rearranged, without huge plumbing expense, to allow a better layout? Is there a need to design for current or future handicapped accessibility?
  • Shop, shop, shop!! Visit home improvement stores, watch remodeling programs on TV or online. Buy bath remodeling books and magazines and flag or cut out pictures of room you love. Before too long, you will discover what colors, layouts, fixtures and amenities you like.
  • Visit with a remodeling contractor, like Edgewood Cabinetry, to begin to refine your dream and set a budget. This might even be your first step, but it helps to have some kind of vision in mind before you seek more help.
  • Think about how this bathroom remodel will fit in with the rest of your home. While you want the room to be up-to-date and fresh, unless you are planning to do the rest of the house, or have already done so, your re-do may just look out of place.
  • The things that give the rest of your home character, artwork, mirrors, photos, window and wall coverings, etc., should also be carried into your new bath. Even the things that are mainly functional in purpose, like mirrors and cabinets, should reflect your taste and personality.
  • Don’t be afraid to use something a little quirky. Add a shower curtain with a large floral print in corals, lime green and turquoise to be the focal point against white subway tiles in your shower. Just don’t try to use several bold patterns or they will only look busy and confusing.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started and narrow down your goals and requirements. Then contact us for expert planning and advice that will make your dream come true, with exceptional quality and within your budget.

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen with new cabinetry, you have to keep in mind that color does matter in the final result.

Sometimes you can be thrown off by color based on lighting, and that can lead to some disastrous situations after a remodel. In order to avoid an expensive re-do on your kitchen, you need to take some time on matching your colors. In the matching process, you have to tie the color of the wood you use, your countertop color, your backsplash color, plus the colors of the wall and floor all together so it makes sense based on what you’ll actually see.

Matching Your Countertop Color with the Wall

One of the best ways to match color schemes is to take the color of your countertop and match it with a piece of your wall color. House Painting Tutorials points out this can be challenging because how you see the color of your countertop sometimes looks different from a particular angle or in different lighting situations. That’s why you should always match the two together at an angle to see how you’ll be viewing it when everything is in place at home.

Looking at them from this perspective, you gain a better sense of reality in the color matchup. The same can be done by taking a piece of the wood you’ll be using in your cabinetry and matching it with a piece of your wall, countertop, or flooring.

Finding Overall Color Balance

The general rule of thumb is that if you have extreme contrasts in your color scheme, you could throw your kitchen into a bit of colorful chaos. While some creative people do that anyway, you have to think of what your guests will think when entering your new kitchen. Considering the kitchen is a place where your guests may spend some considerable time, you can’t expect they’ll all love a wildly divergent color scheme.

You’re much better off thinking in relational terms when it comes to color. If you decide to use bright red on your walls, for instance, you might want to pick a rust or dark reddish color as your cabinet color. The same goes for your floors and backsplash.

Thinking of Lighting and Color Tone

As mentioned earlier, lighting can play tricks on the eye when attempting to match up colors. Too dark of lighting can ultimately make darker color schemes look overly drab in a kitchen. Study your lighting carefully before committing to your kitchen remodel and see whether a lighter color scheme would help brighten things. All it takes is a lighter color on your cabinets and walls to lighten up a room and give a psychological feeling of brightness.

No matter what colors you decide to use in your new kitchen, we can help build it for you here at Edgewood Cabinetry. We understand how color matters in the final result, and we’ll work with you to assure your kitchen remodel color scheme works with your lighting and the reality of your surroundings. At the same time, you’ll be able to enjoy customized cabinetry and shelving that add new dimensions to any outdated kitchen.

When you want to hire a business to do remodeling for you, the more experience they have as builders and remodelers will do you a world of good.

That’s because every remodel is going to have different situations, and a less-experienced builder won’t know how to cope with those issues. Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we’ve seen it all when it comes to remodeling problems. And with our experience, we know how to treat you right by giving personalized services and customized designs.
What can you expect from us that you may not be able to find elsewhere? With our well-rounded expertise in different areas, we provide some options that will make your remodel go even smoother.

Working Directly With You and Free Estimates

We work directly with you so there isn’t any confusion about what you want in the way of new cabinetry. Going through contractors can sometimes lead to some miscommunication that results in redesign disasters. When the customer wants something different from what the builder thinks they want, time and money is wasted on both ends.
Working directly with you, we make sure you receive exactly the design you requested. On top of that, we’ll give free estimates before we build so you’ll be instantly saving money from the get-go.

Accurate Field Measurements

Sometimes people seeking out redesigns go to fly-by-night builders that don’t have experience, or have short knowledge on building technique. These people can give you measurements that aren’t accurate and bring you slipshod cabinetry construction that doesn’t fit correctly.
Through us, you can be assured we’ll give you accurate field measurements. We have extensive expertise working with many clients and years of building knowledge to know exactly what we’re doing.

Designing with CAD Drawings

If you’re not familiar with what CAD means, it stands for computer-assisted design. Our main builder, Pete Rafferty, had a background in illustration before starting Edgewood Cabinetry. He can bring that to you through digital design before any building takes place. You won’t always find this service in other businesses specializing in cabinetry. The 3D designs give you a chance to see exactly how your cabinets will look so last-minute changes can be made to assure your design wishes.

In-Home Delivery

Customer service is another hallmark of the best builders and remodelers. While you won’t always find superior customer service elsewhere, we improve ours by delivering your cabinetry right to your home. Most people don’t want to pick up their custom-made cabinetry in another location and haul it home on their own. Our service here gives you a chance to relax while we bring the cabinetry to you for installation.
As another mark of our commitment to the customer, we provide a warranty on your cabinetry so you’re protected if any future damage occurs.

Be Inspired: Bring Your Dream Redesign to Your Home with Quality Craftsmanship

Here at Edgewood Cabinetry, we want our customers to be inspired in creating a cabinet design in their homes that truly fits their style. It might be easy for someone else to come in and recommend what you need in your home. But we want to work closely with you to customize our cabinetry to create fun living spaces you’ll love for decades to come.

What ideas can you bring? With custom cabinetry, your creativity can be unlimited in any room of your home.

Kitchen Islands and Breakfast Nooks

It seems no kitchen can be without an island or a breakfast nook to look modern. While many of these have standard design, have you considered customizing yours with specialized cabinetry and storage space? Numerous options can be built that give you plenty of storage for pots and pans to avoid having them out in the open. And the built-in cabinetry can be done in various styles, including as pull-outs for easy retrieval of kitchen items.

Modern Bathroom Vanities

Bathroom vanities can also be made to look overly bland as some kitchen islands are. Why not update with yours and add some modern cabinetry design? We can build anything from built-in cabinetry to separate cabinetry placed on top of a stand-alone vanity space. Also, try some different vanity shapes for something different. Once the cabinets are built, we let you choose the color you think works best in your bathroom.

Handcrafted Office Desk

Why stick with a store-bought office desk that doesn’t give you half as much storage space as a customized one can? Get yourself inspired and think of a custom desk we can design for your home office. Think of one with various storage capabilities so you can store even more office supplies than you could before. We’ll make the desk out of the finest wood so you’ll have a durable and stylish family heirloom.

Entertainment Centers

One great thing about custom cabinetry is the ability to create entertainment centers in virtually any part of the house. Nobody says you have to keep your TV in your living room. With some inspired thought, we can design shelf space or cabinetry that holds a TV in any part of your house, whether in a bedroom or a kitchen. Using surrounding cabinetry design gives you an attractive spot that provides more than blank walls to look at around your TV.

No matter where you decide to place your custom cabinetry or shelving, we want you to keep feeling inspired when redesigning. We can even help create other custom ideas for you from mantels to bookshelves.

When looking to install new cabinets, people often have two concerns: money and quality.

They do not want to spend too much money on the cabinets, but they also want to know they are going to get quality cabinets. Quality and a good cost might seem exclusive, but that is not always the case.

At Edgewood Cabinetry, we provide handcrafted custom cabinets, but we believe quality does not have to mean expensive. Our Price Match Challenge can prove that to you. In three easy steps.

First,  visit your local home improvement store or another store which sells cabinets. Pick out the cabinets you like. Figure out how much they will cost you. Make sure you include the cost of installation when it comes to your home improvement store cabinet cost.

Second, contact a Edgewood Cabinetry representative. Ask us for a quote on custom cabinets. To get a proper price match, make sure you are comparing the exact same cabinets. Size, style, wood type, and other features should be taken into consideration when comparisons are made between the two options.

To make sure you get pricing on the same cabinets from both the home improvement store and our company, you might want to write down any measurements you take. If you think you might forget some of the specifics about the cabinets you had priced at the home improvement store, make sure you write those down as well. An accurate photograph of the product may also be helpful.

Once you have priced the cabinets at both the home improvement store and our place, you are ready for the third step, decide which option is best for you. You might be surprised to find Edgewood Cabinetry’s cabinet cost is just as good if not better than the home improvement store’s cabinet cost.  We encourage you to take our Price Match Challenge. If you need more information about the great products we provide, or if you are ready to take the Price Match Challenge, contact us. We are convinced you will not be disappointed with the results.

trash pull out cabinets kitchen

When deciding what to do with your waste bins consider the following things. You want them close to where you are going to be working, but they need to be out of the way, and accessible enough to not have to touch or move it around.   Cabinet pull outs for waste and recycling bins add ease and accessibility to disposal.   They offer logical storage of waste bins with the convenience of a pull out to prevent contamination from touching the waste bins or cabinet doors.

Hafele offers several options for under counter storage of waste and recycling bins.  Their Euro line offers a single or double bin system with top mount.  This line has a metal shelf above the cans that doubles as a lid to contain odors.  Hafele also offers several options in a bottom mount system.  An option for and easy to clean backsplash prevents trash debris from falling behind the bins.  The bottom mount unit can come with a specialized wire management system to hold up to 4 bins in place.  These systems also come with auto open peddle, preventing dirty or contaminated hands from touching the cabinet door.  Three options for bin sizes are 2.25, 8 and 9.25 gallons and come with the hardware.

Waste and Recycle in the Kitchen is a part of life. We have to have somewhere to put that waste that makes sense.  Cabinet pull out systems make it easy to keep trash and recycling in an accessible but out of the way place.  Top and bottom mounts with lids, shelves and storage keep our cabinets from being messy and odoriferous, while auto open systems make it even easier to keep our kitchens clean.

People attempting to sell you cheap cabinetry will emphasize the low prices and point out the superficial features that seem to make the cheap imitation look like the real thing.
However, there are clear differences between a well-made cabinet and a cheap imitation; settling for the cheaper option won’t be a good choice in the long-run.
When considering what separates a well-made cabinet from a cheap imitation, which qualities stand out?
The use of particle board in cheaper cabinets
Instead of solid wood or plywood, cheap cabinets usually use particle board for everything from the shelves to the doors to the cabinet box.  Particle board is made of wood scraps that have been recycled, including wood chips and sawdust.
What are the problems with it? The material has a much greater susceptibility to water damage; this is particularly problematic for cabinets that are closer to the floor or under a sink, but over time it will affect all cabinets, even those further up off the ground.  Because of its tendency to soak up moisture, particle board is more likely to get discolored and to swell.  It won’t be long before it starts to peel, crack, and sag.
Poorer craftsmanship in cheaper cabinets
In cheaper cabinetry, the shelves, mounting strips and other cabinet components are usually too thin and flimsy.
The drawers, often made of stapled or glued particle board, will be more likely to get stuck or make noise when opened or closed; they won’t have high-quality joinery, in particular dovetail joinery.  The drawer slides will be thin strips of metal that are more apt to malfunction; in constrast, high-quality cabinet drawers often have sturdier, full-extension steel slides that also self-close.
The cabinetry will have a cheap finish, which shows itself in scratches and deterioration.  Cabinet doors made from cheap material, such as laminate on particle board, will be more likely to chip and crack.
Even though these cheaper cabinets are called ‘imitations,’ they really don’t resemble well-made cabinetry.
Why go for high-quality cabinetry?
A well-made cabinet will last longer and look beautiful.  And though they’re more expensive than the cheaper imitations, they don’t need to be prohibitively expensive if you get them from the right place.  Furthermore, they’ll save you money in the long-run; you won’t need to keep replacing or fixing them, and if you ever sell your home, you can count on them increasing the value of your property.
Contact us to benefit from well-made cabinetry, designed to function well, last a long time, and also enhance the appearance of your home.
