8 Custom Cabinet Trends to Consider This Year

If you need some inspiration for you next cabinet remodel, try some of the latest custom cabinet trends. Whether you’re redoing your kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom or any other room, these trends help add a breath of fresh air and some unique personality to the room.

While you don’t have to use every trend, there is a trend for everyone. From making a bold statement to keeping it minimal, customize these trends to what you want.

The great part is custom cabinets work in nearly any room or space. So, mix and match some trends based on different rooms.

1. Furniture Style Cabinets

A popular emerging trend is furniture style cabinets. These often have more embellishments or look like they were originally designed to be an end table, nightstand, dresser or something similar. For instance, vintage hutches are being redesigned as vanities or bathroom cabinet storage. You could take your favorite bespoke furniture designs and transform them into custom cabinets in any room, especially offices and living rooms.

2. Functional Drawers

Drawers aren’t just for silverware and small items anymore. One of the more popular custom cabinet trends is functional drawers. Turn a drawer into a wine cooler. Or use one as a food warmer when entertaining. Refrigerated drawers are ideal for storing extra drinks or even snacks for the kids. Functional drawers might look like a regular drawer, but when you pull it out it serves a purpose beyond storage. Get creative and have custom-made drawers that make your life easier.

3. Integrated Appliances

This cabinet trend typically works best in kitchens and laundry rooms. Instead of having your appliances visible as usual, they’re integrated into the cabinets. In fact, they’re often hidden by cabinet doors to create a more streamlined look.

Hide your fridge in what looks like a pantry or create a pull out dishwasher that looks more like a drawer. Even your oven can be built-in to your cabinets.

4. Increased Use Of Oak

Using hardwood isn’t necessarily a new trend. However, an increased use of oak is becoming one of the more noticeable custom cabinet trends. The color and grain look wonderful with most themes, making a versatile choice. Plus, it lasts well, even in more humid environments, such as the bathroom. While many stick with a more natural look, oak also works well with paint to match any room you want. If oak’s not for you, don’t worry, there are plenty of other options to choose from.

5. Open Shelves

Have beautiful dishes, colorful towels, or cute knick-knacks you don’t want hidden away behind cabinet doors? Then embrace the open shelf cabinet trend. In kitchens, open shelves alongside closed cabinets or even hanging over a kitchen island offer easy access and a chance to show off items. You can even add custom lighting to better showcase items.

6. Integrated Storage

While organizers are great, they don’t always fit your cabinets. For instance, a silverware tray may slide around in your drawer or a spice rack might fit awkwardly on your cabinet door. Plus, it’s hard to find organizers that work well for styling products in bathrooms.

Instead, integrated storage is taking center stage among custom cabinet design trends. Forget about settling for a so-so fit. Design cabinets and drawers to fit what you want to store. Have a silverware organizer built into the drawer. Add a slim, deep drawer with holders for hair dryers, curling irons and more.

7. More Bold Colors

Blue, grey and black are starting to take over cabinets, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. This is a major change from the typical natural wood tones and shades of white. Painted cabinets stand out against more neutral floor shades. It can also make a room seem more personal.

8. Keep It Minimal

Naturally, some custom cabinet trends never seem to go out of style. The minimal look is still going strong. This typically involves sticking with white or lighter wood tones. Hardware is simple and cabinets have few embellishments, if any. In fact, flat doors with no insets are common with this trend.

Creating A Great Pet Nook With Custom Cabinets

Creating a great pet nook with custom cabinets not only gives your best furry friend a place of their own, but keeps all their supplies neatly organized.

From keeping food out of sight to making leashes easier to grab, a pet nook can be completely customized to your pet’s needs. You can even transform pet crates to look far more sophisticated.

Pet nooks don’t have to be large. The great news is custom cabinets fit into both small and large spaces, so you’re free to design based on what fits your space.

Consider Pairing With The Mud Room

A great place to add your pet nook with custom cabinets is the mud room. You likely already have cabinets built in to your mud room to help organize shoes, sporting equipment, coats and more. Adding a nook for your pet’s bed and a pull out drawer in a bench for pet food and supplies easily transforms your mud room into a partial pet nook too.

If you have the space, you might add an entire new section to the mud room. This could include custom cabinets with organizational features for your pet supplies. It could also include bedding and even a litter box for kitties.

If you don’t have a mud room or don’t want to change anything up, you can also add your pet nook to your laundry room, bathroom or use that small space under the stairs or other small spaces.

Hide Away Food And Water

Hate the idea of food and water spilling all over your floors? Maybe you have a baby or small child that thinks kibble is for them instead of the dog. Either way, create a pet nook with custom cabinets that hides the food and water while your pet doesn’t need it.

A pull out drawer with a food and water bowl keeps things clean and tidy. You can even have a section that keeps the food and water bowl from spilling into the drawer itself. This prevents the water from hurting the wood. Simply pull out the section, clean it out and put it back. Then, have a cabinet containing a pull out bin of food with a scoop. You can even include one with treats.

Transform Crates

Crates are often a necessity for some pets. From helping them feel safe during a thunderstorm to preventing them from tearing things up when you’re not at home, pet crates are useful. But, they look terrible. Instead, create a pet nook with custom cabinets that transform the crates.

For instance, Havenly has a list of great ideas including one that makes the crate look like a kitchen cabinet with drawers. This gives you space for supplies and the doors (which are just frames for the crate door) open to allow easy access in and out. It’s cute and simple.

Turn Cabinets Into Play Areas

The custom cabinets in your pet nook don’t have to be just for storage. Transform the nook into a play area as well. This works great for smaller pets, such as cats. For example, you might have tiered cabinets that work as steps to reach a window to look out. Or, add sharpening featured to make it easy to climb and jump between cabinets and shelves.

For dogs, you could have gates that pull out from under the cabinets. Or, have doors that connect together when open to create a gated play area for your puppy. Those cabinets could contain favorite toys for the puppy to pull out and play with.

Create Pet Nook Furniture

Thanks to creating a pet nook with custom cabinets, the nook doesn’t just have to be for your pet. For instance, turn your nightstand into both a place for your lamp and a pet bed. You can create built-in living room cabinets that add a pull-out pet bed or shelves for kitties to sleep.

Even a desk or craft area can double as a pet nook with some custom cabinets to aid with storage and give your pet a safe, comfortable place to relax.

Transform Your Child's Room With Custom Cabinets

Could your child’s room use a major makeover to clear away clutter and add space? Easily transform your child’s room with custom cabinets.

Forget those flimsy cube storage units. Instead, opt for something more sturdy and customizable. Plus, you’ll be able to keep your kid’s room organized better than ever before.

With a custom approach, you can even use custom cabinets designed to fit your child’s interests. From the color to how they’re shaped, kids’ cabinets are anything but bland and boring.

Under The Bed Storage

Elevate your child’s bed with fun under the bed storage cabinets. By transforming your child’s room with custom cabinets under the bed, you take advantage of what usually becomes a cluttered dust bunny home. Custom cabinets work with any size or shape children’s bed. Use drawers to store shoes, clothing, books, favorite toys, and more. You can even expand the under the bed cabinets to the headboard.

Use the headboard to store favorite stuffed animals. For hard or heavy items, use glass doors to ensure nothing falls out while your kid’s sleeping.

Create Playful Designs

The great thing about a child’s room is you’re free to get more creative. Do you have a little princess? Install custom cabinets shaped like a castle. Does your child love going hiking? Make the cabinets look like tree. You could even install a bridge between two cabinet trees to store stuffed animals to make them look like they’re in a jungle.

With pre-fabricated cabinets, you can’t get this same playfulness. Custom lets you create a room your child will love. Their cabinets aren’t just storage anymore. They’re part of the room’s personality.

Cabinet-Play Desk Combo

Easily transform your child’s room with custom cabinets by giving them more room to play. Create a cabinet that also functions as a play desk. This could be an area for them to color, paint, play with toys and more. The cabinet serves as storage for supplies and toys. A corner can easily be converted to a small play area. Leave a small open area in the cabinets for a chair and you’re all set.

If you have multiple kids sharing the same room, create a separate section for each child to play. You can either space the cabinets out or paint them different colors to designate each child’s area.

Multi-Color Cabinets

Speaking of painting, brighten up a child’s room with multi-color cabinets. Different colors have different effects on your child’s mood and even mental growth. If you don’t want to paint the walls, get more color with your cabinets. After all, they’re easier to take down and reface if you want to change colors.

For example, you might choose two or three colors to alternate your kid’s cabinets. Greens, blues and oranges are relaxing, soothing and cheerful without being overwhelming.

Use Drawers And Bins

When it comes to putting toys away, kids love drawers and bins. After all, they can just pile everything in. Transform your child’s room with custom cabinets that incorporate mainly drawers and bins. Each cabinet can be sized to exactly what you need.

You could even add labels to each drawer and bin to make it easier for your child to put everything away where it belongs. Naturally, you can add custom cabinets nearly anywhere in your child’s room. Use them along walls, in a corner or even in the middle of the room to create a fun play area.

Break Apart A Shared Room

If you have two siblings sharing a room, you know that each kid usually wants their own space. Use custom cabinets to transform the room into two separate areas. Use a wall of cabinets to create a private space for each child. Each has storage on their side of the wall. They can still have a shared play area and closet. Or, let the cabinets become wardrobes for each child. You can always add cabinets to the closet to store other items. HGTV has a list of incredible kids’ bedrooms and playrooms to really inspire how creative you can get, including breaking apart a room.

Edgewood Cabinetry custom cabinets

When it comes to renovating or remodeling a home, you have endless decisions to make. One thing to keep in mind is to have a general aesthetic layout for your entire home. Identifying the overall aesthetic will assist the decision-making process.

However, many people wonder about matching custom cabinets. For example, do the bathroom cabinets have to match the ones in the kitchen? Paying attention to such small details will help you execute a beautiful and functional home. Here are factors to keep in mind when choosing bathroom and kitchen custom cabinets.

Choosing Custom Cabinets

Complementary Styles

You don’t have to match all the cabinets in your home, but you can choose kitchen and bathroom cabinets that complement each other. For example, if you are going with modern cabinetry in your kitchen, you can also select modern cabinetry of a different style for your bathroom. Doing this will allow you to keep a uniform aesthetic all over the house, and the cabinets will complement each other. That is why you should always choose cabinet styles that don’t compete or clash with each other.

Proximity

How close is the bathroom to the kitchen? If your kitchen has a powder room nearby, you should have the same style cabinets. Doing this will provide a flow from one space to the other. On the other hand, if your bathroom is on another floor or in a different home section, you don’t have to match the cabinets.

Blending It All Together

All the elements of your home should blend and complement each other. That does not mean that everything has to match, but you should consider using complementary colors so the house’s flow remains uniform. You can also repeat the same cabinet style throughout the house if that is what you want.

Of course, you are the one who holds the vision of your home and are under no obligation to follow these rules. Many designers create beautiful homes without following conventional interior design rules, and you can do the same.

7 Things To Consider Before Painting Your Cabinets

Ready to give your cabinets a major facelift? Painting your cabinets helps transform your kitchen and breathes new life into faded cabinets.

As with most projects, it’s not quite as simple as just grabbing some paint and a brush. If you want the finished cabinets to look amazing, there are some important things to consider.

A little preparation before you start painting ensures your cabinets look as great or even better than you imagined.

1. How Long The Project Takes

Even with quick drying paint, you’re still looking at least a full weekend when it comes to painting your cabinets. For most, set aside three days to a week to complete the project. This gives you time to prepare the cabinets, paint them, let them dry, and reassemble everything.

In the meantime, make arrangements for where you’ll store everything that’s in your cabinets and how or if you’ll use the kitchen during the process. This might be a great week for just eating out.

2. Take Everything Apart

The next thing to do is take everything apart. You might want to hurry things along and just paint over the hinges or try to tape over them. However, it’s much easier to just take the doors off of the cabinets. Remove all hardware. Painting over hinges just leads to flaking and stuck hinges.

To make life easier, label everything so you know where it goes. You can work on painting your cabinets one section at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed. This is also a great time to declutter your kitchen.

3.Clean Cabinets Thoroughly

A common reason paint doesn’t stick well to cabinets is they’re not clean when you start. This can lead to discolored spots, fading, chipping and other annoying issues. It’s always best to start with a clean slate to remove any grease, dirt and lint that might be on your cabinets. Take time to thoroughly clean your cabinets.

If there’s a layer of paint already there, you’ll need to strip the paint. Make sure you remove all the paint before repainting. Otherwise, the old paint can flake, taking your new paint with it.

4. Smooth Out Rough Spots

While you might not even be able to see it, your cabinets likely have some rough spots. It could be a small scratch on the bottom of a door or a rough area at the edge of the door where you open and close it. Paint needs a smooth surface to apply and dry evenly.

Sand your cabinets lightly to remove rough spots. For scratches and chips, use wood filler to smooth them out. This prevents darker areas on your cabinets when you paint.

5. Priming The Wood For Paint

When painting your cabinets, you’ll need to start by priming the wood first. Custom cabinets typically use real wood, especially for the doors. Pre-fabricated cabinets might use particle board or something similar. Pick a primer that’s made for your type of cabinet.

Primer creates a better surface for the paint, making it last much longer. You can save time and money by choosing a paint that has primer built-in. Pay attention to any special instructions when applying primer or using a primer/paint mix.

6. Choose A Quality Paint

The single most important thing to consider when painting your cabinets is choosing a quality paint. Don’t just grab the cheapest bucket you can find. Talk with a paint expert at your local hardware or paint supply store. See what they recommend and what customers like best. You can also research brands online first to see what brands and types hold up the longest.

Choosing a cheap, low-quality paint means you’ll need repaint sooner rather than later. You’re also more likely to end up with streaks. Cheaper paints might also have a stronger odor, making it more difficult to paint your cabinets.

7. Avoiding Brush Strokes

Typically, you’d just grab a brush, dip in the paint and start painting. But, if you don’t use the right type of brush, you could end up with noticeable brush strokes. This just ruins all your hard work. Instead, opt for an angular brush and foam roller. Fusion Mineral Paint and Pro Paint Corner both have great guides to avoid brush strokes.

Edgewood Cabinetry custom cabinets

Being the foundation of your kitchen, finding the right style for your kitchen custom cabinets is crucial. It not only sets the tone of your kitchen’s visual look but also impacts how you go about accessing your storage. Finding the right style and type of cabinet door takes knowledge and understanding of your household needs.

Custom Cabinet Styles

When you look at your choices, they are endless. From shaker or flat to inset or raised, each style and type has its qualities and specialties. With so many options on the table, picking one can be stressful. Before the enthusiasm takes better of you, let’s discuss the three key points to consider while selecting the cabinet doors that suit you, your kitchen’s style, and your lifestyle.

Color & Finishing

Rustic-style cabinet doors will not go with a modern kitchen, while a shaker type will not be suitable for a country-style kitchen. The style of your kitchen cabinet door has to marry up with the interior décor of your kitchen. If you want to evoke a Mediterranean feel in your kitchen, you have to use high-quality woods with rich brown colors conveying a sophisticated elegance. If you’re more interested in sleek or minimalist design, a contemporary style cabinet can give your kitchen a clean look. Work through some kitchen design types and see what kind of kitchen you envision, and only then will you be able to select a suitable style of cabinet doors.

Experts recommend homeowners stick with timeless choices and avoid chasing trendy and fancy designs. It’s your personal preference at the end of the day, but remember you have to live with the style you choose for many years.

Function & Organization

Having the right type of kitchen cabinet door can impact your habits. You have to pick the style that meets your customized needs and your family’s lifestyle. If you’re always on the go and are a bit lazy in doing chores, you may want a door style that is easy to wipe down and keep clean, like a shaker style. But don’t hesitate to pick a fancier kitchen cabinet door style if you’re a family with older kids.

Cabinet Hardware

Hardware is much less expensive to change than the cabinet doors. If you like to change up your decor frequently, consider selecting a simple door style and jazz it up with fancy hardware. Doorknobs, drawer pulls, and cabinet-door handles have a significant visual impact on the overall design and are easily changed.

7 Cabinet Door Styles For Your Kitchen Remodel

One of the easiest ways to remodel your kitchen is with new cabinet door styles. The hard part is picking the right door style for your kitchen.

Since your doors are the most visible element, it’s worth taking the extra time to look at various styles. You’ll want something that fits well with your kitchen’s theme.

Of course, you can always do a quick kitchen makeover now and then just by opting for new door styles. This is a great way to keep your kitchen modern without replacing everything.

1. Flat

One of the simplest kitchen cabinet door styles is flat. As the name implies, it’s a basic flat door without any embellishments. While it might seem plain at first glance, don’t discount it. For modern or minimalist kitchens, this is one of the best options.

Another benefit is they’re one of the easiest door styles to clean. Without any raised or recessed areas, all you have to do is wipe over them, which makes keeping your kitchen clean much easier. They’re easy to dress up with the right hardware too.

2. Shaker

Shaker is one of the most classic cabinet door styles. It’s also one of the most popular. It’s made up of five pieces and looks like a recessed flat center panel framed by four thin pieces along the sides. The design is made to emphasize utility over style, but shaker is still incredibly stylish.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that’s not quite as basic as flat, shaker is definitely the right way to go.

3. Distressed

Often, the easiest way to pick the right door style is by thinking about your overall kitchen theme or even home theme. If you want a more antique or vintage theme, distressed cabinet doors are the ideal option. The good news is distressed doors can use any other cabinet door styles. For instance, you can turn flat or shaker styles into distressed.

The process involves taking new doors and making them look older using special techniques. Since this process can cost more, it’s a good idea to opt for a simpler overall door style to stay on budget.

4. Inset

Inset doors look absolutely stunning, though they can be more expensive. Like the name says, this door style sets inside the cabinet frame versus on the outside. This also allows the hinges to be exposed, adding a little more hardware to the outside of your cabinet doors.

This style creates an elegant look. They often have a raised style as well, though flat or shaker styles work well too.

5. Square Raised

Another one of the more classic cabinet door styles is square raised. These are similar to shaker, but instead of a flat center panel, there’s a raised center design that can be shaped like a smaller version of the cabinet door or a more custom design.

It’s often referred to as square as the raised portion tends to be either square or rectangle. However, there are other similar raised door styles, such as the cathedral arch which adds a decorative raised arch at the top of the square or rectangle.

6. Beadboard

Want a nice homey look? Try beadboard. Just like the paneling by the same name, this cabinet door style turns the center panel of the cabinet door into a beadboard style. This gives your kitchen a more unique look than most other cabinet door styles.

The obvious downside is all those recessed cracks between each strip attract dirt, grease and more. So, this style can be much more difficult to clean.

7. Custom Doors

Often, it’s hard to find exactly what you’re looking for. If you have an idea that doesn’t exactly fit with other door styles, create your own. Consider designing a completely custom kitchen that includes custom doors. Mix and match some of the styles above. Or, design something that fits more with your dream vision for your kitchen.

If you’re ready to try out a new cabinet door style for your kitchen remodel, contact Edgewood Cabinetry today to get started and get you one step closer to your dream kitchen.

By opting for custom cabinets, you get the perfect size and storage you need for your exact space. With no compromises, you’re able to organize your home the way you want.

1. Living Room

Living rooms and family rooms are often overlooked with it comes to custom cabinetry. However, they’re the perfect place to add custom cabinets. Usually, you have magazines, electronics, remotes and maybe even kids’ toys. You might even want a place to store a few extra blankets or pillows to lounge on the couch while watching TV.

Turning your entertainment center into custom cabinets that perfectly fit your electronics, books, magazines and everything else makes your entire living room look more spacious and organized. You can also have cabinets behind your couch or along a wall.

2. Hallways

Hallways are probably one of the most surprising places to add custom cabinets. While you don’t have much space, thinner cabinets work well to give you easy access to coats, gloves and hats if you don’t have a hallway closet. You can also add small bins to store toys, blankets and more.

3. Garage

Often, people opt for pre-built cabinets in their garages or just shelving units. But, you can makeover your garage with custom cabinets. Get the perfect storage for all the random stuff that gets stored in the garage. You can create custom storage for tools, set up closed shelving to keep dirt and dust off of your holiday decorations and packed away keepsakes.

Instead of everything falling off of shelves, it’s neatly tucked away out of sight. Your garage looks nicer and you have the optimal storage. You could even turn part of your garage into a custom mudroom.

4. Laundry Room

Detergents, towels and your iron all deserve a nice place to stay. That’s why it’s a great idea to add custom cabinets to your laundry room. Instead of just a barebones washer and dryer with a shelf, get cabinets to store everything. You can even add a foldaway ironing board inside a cabinet and a drying rack between cabinets.

It’s also a great place to store extra towels and bedding. Or, use it as temporary storage for clean clothes for each member of the household to collect.

5. Closet

Closets don’t always have the most space. However, whether it’s a small coat closet or a large bedroom closet, custom cabinets make a good addition. With custom cabinets, you don’t have to worry about whether they’ll fit or not. In fact, you could even use cabinets to transfer a medium-sized closet into a home office. A few cabinets and a chair is all you really need to go from closet to office.

6. Dining Room

Usually, dining rooms get a hutch or no real storage at all. But, your dining room is a great place to display your fine china, store extra silverware, keep tablecloths or just have some extra space for larger countertop appliances you don’t use all that often. You can add custom cabinets along one wall or even use cabinets as a divider between your kitchen and dining room if they’re made together.

7. Bedroom

For bedroom furniture, you usually have a nightstand, chest of drawers and dresser. Most people don’t think about using cabinets, though. You can build a custom wardrobe or cabinets that serve as a chest of drawers, but fit your clothing better.

For a kid’s room, cabinets are the perfect addition. Kids can store their toys, shoes and more. They can even use the top of cabinets as a play area. Plus, their rooms might just look neater.

If you’re ready to add custom cabinets throughout your home, contact Edgewood Cabinetry today to discuss your projects.

Edgewood Cabinetry cabinet style

It might sound simple, but choosing cabinet styles to fit your décor is sometimes one of the hardest decorating decisions you can ever make. The cabinet finish, stained or painted, has a substantial visual impact on the room. Regardless of what enthusiasts on either side have to say, neither of these two options is perfect. It all boils down to the unique tastes and preferences of each individual. To help with this decision, we have listed each option’s benefits and potential drawbacks.

Painted Cabinets

Painted cabinets are a big deal today. They offer the opportunity to add a burst of color to any space. They are highly versatile and look lovely against many types of décor, flooring, and kitchen backsplash.

Pros

Variety. These come in a wide range of cabinet colors that make it possible to match a specific aesthetic. They also can be delivered in either two-tone cabinets or bold paint. Bold statements or a relaxing atmosphere can all be expressed through colored cabinets.

Modern Style. Modern cabinet styles feature more painted cabinets. If you are aiming for sleek surfaces, painted cabinets are the way to go. The colors can be emphasized by using either a matte or glossy finish.

Saving Money. Painted cabinets are made using medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which is cheaper than the hardwood associated with staining. MDF produces a better and smoother finish at a reasonable price.

Cons

Hidden Grain. Grains make your cabinets look unique. The cabinet’s personality and warmth might be lost if the grain is covered.

Maintenance. The look of fresh-painted cabinets is appealing but short-lived. These cabinets are vulnerable to scratches and chips, which are easy to spot and problematic to fix.

Difficult to Replicate Paint. When the paint on the cabinet chips, there is no guarantee that you can get the same color shade for touch-ups, especially for custom colors.

Stained Cabinets

Stained cabinets might not be as popular or trendy as the painted ones, but they are an excellent option for giving any space an appealing, natural look.

Pros

Versatility. Stained cabinet styles offer the versatility of looks that can’t be achieved with paint alone. These include techniques such as natural, rustic, or traditional.

Hardwood Showcasing. Your cabinet style largely depends on the type of hardwood you choose. With the help of the right stain, numerous beautiful varieties can be showcased. Stain colors bring out the natural qualities of the hardwood.

Long-Term Maintenance. If you don’t want to be forced to touch up your cabinets regularly, take solace in stained cabinets. They will look beautiful for decades without the need for touch-ups.

Cons

Few Color Options. Stains provide access to numerous styles and types of hardwood, but the color selection is limited. If you have a custom hue in mind for your kitchen, stained cabinets may not match perfectly.

Highlights Unwanted Grains. Grains are beautiful and bring out the natural look of the hardwood. However, they also attract attention to flaws like knotholes and burrs that are unsightly.
